TheDivision of Student Lifehas an outstanding opportunity for anAssociate Vice President to join their team.

The Associate Vice President for Student Life (AVP) provides broad leadership in the development and implementation of programs services and opportunities that focus on creating spaces of engagement involvement leadership affinity and belonging. The AVP works collaboratively with Student Life and other campus departments to support innovative and transformative programs initiatives that help students feel welcomed supported included valued engaged and celebrated.


The AVP provides strategic leadership to seven departments in the areas of experiential learning student engagement and collaboratively aligned developmentally oriented programs and services: Community Standards & Student Conduct Disability Resources for Students the Office of Ceremonies Student Media Student Veteran Life the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life and the Husky Union Building. While the departments are varied in their specific missions they each involve supporting students in their developmental and academic progress. Please note that the specific departments may change over time as organizational shifts take place in the division.

The AVP will work effectively with a wide variety of constituent groups including students staff faculty neighboring communities and alumni. This position collaborates closely with academic and student services partners across the University of Washington to advance a students Husky Experience. The AVP must stay apprised of rapidly changing regulations and expectations national trends best practices and effectively coordinate the leadership in these areas to develop processes policies and practices that best support UW students. This position requires a broad body of knowledge in Student Life practice as well as excellent management and leadership skills. The position requires a very high level of independent decision-making and professional judgment.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership (50%)

  • Serve as a member of the Division of Student Life Executive Leadership Team; collaboratively help develop organizational goals objectives and priorities.

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for student engagement initiatives with a lens toward co-curricular learning belonging leadership and engagement.

  • Develop organizational priorities and goals for the collective of seven student support units: Community Standards & Student Conduct Disability Resources for Students the Office of Ceremonies (New Student Convocation Commencement) Student Media Student Veteran Life the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life and the Husky Union Building.

  • Provide strategic leadership for the development and implementation of initiatives policies and procedures related to student leadership engagement and involvement.

  • Evaluate program effectiveness and strategically plan to continually improve effectiveness and efficiency.

  • Consult with the Student Life Executive Team on campus emergency and crisis situations.

  • Support the Division of Student Life to foster a campus climate in which belonging and connection are integral to all aspects of the student experience.

  • Represent the Division of Student Life through university engagement and interactions with parents of UW students and other members of the community.

  • Work closely with the Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity and Undergraduate Academic Affairs to create initiatives and opportunities for collaboration to advance student engagement and belonging.

  • Chair liaise and/or serve on a variety of University Committees (e.g. Services & Activities Fee Committee Use of University Facilities Faculty Council on Student Affairs).

  • Chair liaise and/or serve on Student Life committees (e.g. Staff Development Committee).

Management/Administrative (50%)

  • Supervise Directors of seven Student Life Departments: 1) Community Standards & Student Conduct: 9 staff 4 student staff; 2) Disability Resources for Students: 33 staff 104 student staff; 3) Office of Ceremonies: 5 staff; 4) Student Media: 2 staff 33 student staff; 5) Student Veteran Life: 3-4 staff 21 student staff; 6) Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life: 3 staff 24 student staff/Council leaders; 7) Husky Union Building: 52 staff 201 student staff.

  • Provide strategic guidance and leadership on departmental budget planning and management recruitment and hiring capital projects and policy development.

  • Assist with University and Student Life projects and initiatives.

  • Prepare annual reports regarding activities initiatives programs and outcomes. Provide ad hoc reports as requested.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctoral Degree in Psychology / Education / or related field.

  • Nine or more years of work experience related to strategic and supervisory leadership in the area of student support.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Evidence of regional and/or national involvement in professional organizations related to the leadership and management of student support functions and other Student Affairs services/activities.

Compensation Benefits and Position Details

Pay Range Minimum:

$190008.00 annual

Pay Range Maximum:

$202008.00 annual
