The position is based in Ottawa or Toronto.
Your role
As a Senior Legal Counsel specializing in labour & employment law you will provide solicitor services to the organization including senior management of People and Culture and other components of CBC/Radio-Canada. You will provide barrister services or will be involved in labour and employment litigation matters such as labour arbitration administrative and civil litigation. You will also provide labour and employment legal counselling services on significant issues and will oversee outside counsel if engaged.
You will participate in task forces or in ongoing or special project committees. You will provide advice and recommendations to senior company executives on areas of extreme sensitivity high profile or having potential for major strategic impact.
You will promote the use of corporate Law Department services and will maintain formal and informal contacts within the local legal community.
You will participate in managing the activities of the Law Departments administrative and legal staff including staffing training and development of employees. You will participate in the development of objectives and strategies for the department.
Qualifications
We are looking for a person with the following:
Minimum 10 years labour relations and employment law (including pension and benefits) experience acquired in either private practice or in-house but including significant experience in pleading and representation work.
Member of the Ontario Bar.
Ability to defend principled positions while contributing to the realization of corporate objectives and conciliating diverging points of views.
Highly developed skills in negotiating complex agreements and leading sensitive discussions aimed at settling litigation or other cases liable to go before the courts.
Superior oral and written communication and public-speaking skills to convey critical information to clients
Knowledge and experience in federal labor and employment law (an asset).
Able to contribute to building corporate know-how policies and strategies related to labour relations and employment law.
Able to deal effectively with clients outside counsel as well as Law Department colleagues.
Must be able to work autonomously.
Must be available for occasional travel sometimes on short notice.
Solid command of English.
Knowledge of French (an asset).
