Job Summary

Position: Hospital Based Wound Care Orthopedic/Hand and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery PA

Location: Fairfax VA

A wellestablished surgical group providing advanced care in wound management orthopedic and hand surgery and reconstructive plastic surgery is seeking a highly skilled Physician Assistant to join its expanding team. This role supports a growing service line that includes hospitalbased wound care complex orthopedic and hand cases and reconstructive procedures. The ideal candidate brings strong clinical judgment adaptability and a commitment to delivering exceptional patientcentered care in a fastpaced surgical environment.


Job Description
Performs clinical evaluations physical exams develops treatment plans (splintingcasting wound care medication management) assists in surgery (fractures tendonrepairs) manages pre/post-op care including advanced wound care (debridementdressings) orders/interprets diagnostic testing (X-rays MRI CT) and educates patientsfocusing on holistic upper extremity health from diagnosis to full recovery in clinic ORand inpatient settings.

Key Responsibilities:
Patient Evaluation: Take detailed histories perform physical exams and other
diagnostic processes (hand wrist elbow) diagnose conditions like carpal tunnel
arthritis fractures & tendon injuries.
Diagnostic Interpretation: Order and analyze X-rays MRIs CTs EMGs.
Treatment Planning: Develop non-operative plans (splinting casting injections)
manage medications and coordinate therapy referrals.
Surgical Assistance: Act as first assist in OR.
Post-Operative Care: Manage wound care (dressing changes suture/staple
removal) monitor progress and provide follow-up.
Wound Care: As part of daily rounds - Perform debridement manage complex
wounds educate on healing and complete timely/accurate coding and charting
of daily encounters.
Patient Education: Teach patients and families about conditions treatments
post-op care and rehab.
Collaboration: Work with lead surgeon OT therapists specialized PAs MAs and
other patient care and billing team members. This is required to ensure superior
care and efficiency when performing and transferring patients from ER WHC
Surgical to private practice for Specialized OT Splinting PO care and evaluation.
Participate in clinical case review continuous quality improvement initiates and
team meetings at primary practice location.
Serve as key point of contact for patient questions and concerns throughout care
continuum.
Ensure adherence to hospital protocols state regulation MIPS and scope-of-
practice requirements.
Stay current with clinical best practices non-operative management and surgical
techniques through ongoing education and CME.
Educate patients and families on relevant anatomy treatment options recovery
expectations and long-term health
Represent the lead surgeon and serve as primary liaison with the hospital(s) to
facilitate smooth operations procedural efficiency flow of crucial patient care
information and scheduling.

Typical Procedures & Skills:
Surgical: Assist in surgical procedures including patient positioning prepping
and first assist in OR.
Minor Procedures: Suture/staple removal I&D of superficial infections foreign
body removal casting/splinting pre/post-opertive dressing changes wound
assessments and suture/staple removal
Documentation: Accurate EMR charting.
Prescribing: Medications orthotics braces as allowed.

Work Environment:
Combines clinic operating room WHC and inpatient care.
Supports surgeon and provides medical coverage as a team-based approach
Demonstrates confidence and independence with daily processes/surgical/WHC
while providing daily systematic brief/direct Q&A patient summaries to lead
surgeon.
Act as extension of surgeon to increase patient care efficiency and rounding at
WHC and other Inova sister facilities
Actively network with all facility support teams to boost productivity volume and
to ensure accurate supply/tool preparation for surgeries.
Typically M-F / 7 AM 4 PM with occasional add-on PRN

Minimum Requirements
Completion of an ARCPA accredited Physician Assistant program
Masters degree in Physician Assistant Studies or related graduatelevel PA program
Successful completion of the PANCE (Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination)
Current NCCPA certification (or eligibility to obtain)
Eligibility for Virginia PA licensure through the Virginia Board of Medicine
