King County Metro Transits Facilities Division has an exciting opportunity for a Utility Line Worker Helper.


Utility Line Worker Helpers assist journey-level trolley overhead line crew and/or electrician constructors in the repair maintenance and construction of transit power distribution electrical systems and high voltage trolley overhead systems.


This recruitment will immediately fill up to one (1) Career Service position and may be used to create an eligibility pool for future Career Service as well as fully-benefitted Term-Limited Temporary (TLT) and/or Special Duty Assignments (SDA) vacancies valid up to 12 months or until the pool is exhausted and at the discretion of the hiring authority.


Interviews are anticipated to begin during the week ofFebruary2 2026 but dates are subject to change.

Job Duties

Applyingequity and social justice principlesis a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. All employees are expected to model and apply our equity and social justice shared values behaviors and practices. As a Utility Line Worker Helper you will also:

  • Load and unload tools materials and equipment from trucks.
  • Inspect and hand equipment and materials to line crew workers repairing underground or overhead power lines.
  • Assist crew workers in trimming trees shoveling dirt and gravel and other tasks required in setting up line poles.
  • Assist crew workers in the installation and maintenance of the Trolley Overhead system.
  • Direct street and pedestrian traffic around repair sites; provide flagging and other traffic control duties.
  • Alert crew workers of potential hazards such as high trucks that could hit tower deck or oncoming trolleys.
  • May operate line trucks in absence of a line material worker.
  • Respond to emergency repair calls during non-working hours as necessary.

Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills

To be considered eligible for this role applicants must possess these MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with electrical trades.
  • Skill in the care of related tools machinery and equipment.
  • Skill in operating associated types of power tools machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team; ability to interact appropriately with others.
  • Ability to demonstrate predictable reliable and timely attendance.
  • Demonstrated ability to read write and follow verbal instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive in a safe and responsible manner.


The most competitive applicants will possess theseDESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience or demonstrated ability to work in and around high voltage equipment under the direction of journey-level line crew workers and/or electrician constructors
  • Current Washington State Flagger Certification
  • Current Forklift Operator Certification
  • Current First Aid Certification


Necessary special requirements:

  • Possess a valid Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Class B endorsement (or above) with an acceptable driving record or the ability to obtain one within six (6) months of hire with paid training and time provided by the County.
  • Ability to obtain Flagger Forklift Operator and First Aid certifications within six (6) months of hire with paid training and time provided by the County.

Safety Sensitive

These positions are considered safety-sensitive. Applicants for positions defined as safety-sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and subsequent to the commencement of employment will be subject to random post-accident reasonable suspicion return to duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal DOT alcohol and controlled substances testing program protocols.


Selection Process
Applications will be screened to determine whether candidates meet the minimum qualifications as well as for clarity completeness and responsiveness to the application instructions above. Formal offers will be finalized after candidates have successfully completed any necessary pre-employment processes such as reference checks and internal record reviews.

Work Location and Schedule
These positions report to the King County Power Distribution headquarters located at 2255 4th Avenue S Seattle WA 98134. Employees are dispatched from this location to multiple King County facilities located throughout the greater King County area.


These positions are full-time scheduled for 40 hours a week. These positions are usually scheduled 4 days per week 10 hours per day and are usually scheduled day shifts beginning at 6:00 a.m. though schedules may change in the future and may include evening and overnight shifts emergency call-outs or other schedule adjustments. These positions are non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and are eligible for overtime pay with supervisor approval. These positions are not eligible for telework/remote work.


Physical Requirements

These positions require the ability to run a hand line shovel dirt and gravel assist in raising poles jump trolleys and lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds (up to 100 pounds with assistance). Work is performed outside in all weather conditions and requires exposure to traffic and high voltage wires. Successful candidates will be required to wear Arc Flash uniforms category 2 daily and up to category 4 as needed. Metro provides the uniforms.
