Position Overview
The Progressive Care Unit Registered Nurse provides intermediate-level care for adult and geriatric patients requiring continuous cardiac monitoring and stepdown-level nursing services. This role supports patients transitioning from critical care or those requiring enhanced observation and specialized cardiac and respiratory support.
Scheduling & Charting
Night shift: 7:00 PM 7:00 AM
Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
Holiday requirement: Every other holiday as needed
RTO/Block/Special Scheduling Requests: Must be submitted at time of application
Call-off policy: Up to three shifts may be canceled during the 13-week contract
Charting system: EPIC (required)
First-time travelers: Accepted
Local candidates: RN candidates within a defined local radius are not accepted
Licensure & Certifications
Active New York State RN license required (single-state; compact not accepted)
Pending licenses not accepted
BLS ACLS NIHSS required
Required Experience & Clinical Skills
Minimum stepdown/PCU-level experience (PCU DOU or IMC)
Telemetry monitoring and cardiac rhythm interpretation
Emergency response and participation in Rapid Response and Code teams
Management of cardiac drips (non-titrating)
Blood product administration
Central and peripheral line care and management
IV therapy and phlebotomy
Oxygen therapy via nasal cannula and non-invasive airway management
Strict adherence to isolation precautions
Patient Population
Adults and Geriatrics
Common diagnoses include long-term pulmonary conditions ENT surgical patients and post-surgical patients requiring stepdown-level monitoring
Unit Details & Floating
Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:45
Floating: Required within scope of competency and skillset
Documentation & Attire
EMR: EPIC
Scrub color: Any combination of navy blue and white
