Position Overview:

Under the supervision of the Inspection Supervisor the Mosquito Control Inspector conducts field inspections treats for mosquito larvae and adults and provides public education in the assigned area of operation; provides maintenance and service to vehicles and equipment.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Inspects for mosquito public health pest problems specifically larval development sites and mosquito adult populations within Harris County and but not limited to the ship channel and bordering wetlands and waterways including dredge spoil areas storm sewers catch basins ditches etc.
  • During inspections sample/collect adult and larval populations to identify them as appropriate photograph/map mosquito breeding sites for potential litigation use deploy light traps preform landing rates to determine adult migration patterns and record all data collected into the database.
  • Performs appropriate control measures to mosquito populations or other pests as required.
  • Uses pesticides in accordance with federal state and local regulations and guidelines and records all usage.
  • Monitors application rate and checks chemical calibration.
  • Analyzes meteorological tidal data and larval development sites to forecast larval hatch and adult emergence.
  • Inspects vehicle and equipment used daily performs minor field maintenance on spray equipment helps mechanic with minor repairs and assists in mixing insecticides.
  • Perform nighttime ULV (Ultra Low Volume) applications to control mosquito populations in assigned areas based on disease surveillance and division needs
  • Other duties as assigned including special tasks involved in responding to an emergency event.

Requirements

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Experience:

  • At least one (1) year of experience pest management biology fieldwork or environmental monitoring.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Valid Drivers License (Texas upon hire) along with a good driving record required for daily surveillance and collection of species
  • Must acquire a Texas Certified Pesticide Noncommercial Political Applicators License within one year of employment

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic skills using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge of general biology and morphology of mosquitoes and their control
  • Ability to able to calculate and comprehend simple measurements
  • Experience in reading and comprehending maps
  • Ability to utilize a GPS unit
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal & written)

Preferences

Experience:

  • At least one (1) season of experience with an organized mosquito control program or public health agency or operations.

General Information

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:

  • Full Time Regular Non-Exempt
  • 40 hours per week
  • Must be able to work nights weekends and holidays as required to accomplish the mission of MVCD

Work Environment:

  • Office work and Field work. Field work requires driving a county vehicle to conduct mosquito inspections on a variety of public and private properties and in a variety of urban and natural environments.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift 70 lbs. be in good physical health able to tolerate high heat and humidity for extended periods of time outdoors while working in a variety of urban and natural environments. Must be in good physical health; able to tolerate high heat and high humidity for extended periods of time while working in spoils site ship channel location asphalt concrete dirt streets etc. Requires lifting bending kneeling walking up steep inclines working near and around water residences wooded areas etc.
