Job Summary


Provide direct inpatient psychiatric nursing care to male and female Veterans (18 years of age and older) in acute mental health and behavioral health units.

Perform and document comprehensive mental health nursing assessments including suicide risk assessments safety assessments and withdrawal assessments (such as the Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment).

Develop implement evaluate and update individualized nursing plans of care in collaboration with psychiatrists psychologists social workers and other members of the interdisciplinary team.

Administer monitor and document psychotropic and other prescribed medications in accordance with Veterans Affairs policies observing for therapeutic effectiveness and adverse reactions.

Manage psychiatric and medical emergencies including crisis intervention detoxification and withdrawal symptoms and patient safety incidents.

Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment by applying de-escalation techniques and participating in the prevention and management of disruptive behavior.

Provide patient and family education related to mental health conditions medications treatment plans self-management strategies and discharge planning.

Accurately document assessments interventions and patient responses in the Veterans Affairs Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) within the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA).

Coordinate care transitions across the continuum of care including discharge planning and aftercare follow-up.

Comply with all applicable Veterans Affairs Veterans Health Administration Joint Commission Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and federal regulatory requirements.

Complete required Veterans Affairs orientation mandatory annual training competency validation and quality assurance activities.

Provide care to patients who are COVID-19 positive or Patients Under Investigation when required.

Completes required organizational compliance education including assigned requirements that are client-specified for Joint Commission Healthcare Staffing Services certification or other regulatory bodies.


Qualifications :

Basic Requirements/Certifications:

Must possess a current full active and unrestricted Registered Nurse license in any United States state territory commonwealth or the District of Columbia.

Must have successfully passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses.

Must possess at least two (2) years of direct patient care experience within the last three (3) years as a Psychiatric Registered Nurse.

Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a mental health setting including experience within the last six (6) months exclusive of agency assignments.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an American Heart Association approved provider.
Education Required:

Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing approved by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education or the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Associate Degree in Nursing required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.

May require bending stooping and lifting up to 15 lbs.
Other Special Qualifications:

Must be able to read write and speak English to effectively communicate.

US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card is required.

Pass/possess VA Public Trust Clearance.

Must provide own royal blue scrubs and wear Veterans Affairsapproved identification at all times.


Additional Information :

Pay range is based on several factors and may vary in addition to a full range of medical financial and/or other benefits. Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicants background experience skills internal equity and alignment with geographical market data.
