A Journeyman Technician is a certified highly skilled professional (often holding a Red Seal in Canada)responsible for independently diagnosing repairing and maintaining complex mechanical electrical and hydraulic systems. They perform advanced troubleshooting engine repairs and quality control checks while mentoring apprentices and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
Core Responsibilities
- Diagnostics & Troubleshooting:Using advanced diagnostic equipment to identify malfunctions in engines transmissions brakes and electrical systems.
- Repair & Maintenance:Performing complex repairs including engine overhauls drivetrain repairs and electrical system diagnostics.
- Quality Assurance:Testing repaired equipment to ensure it meets manufacturer specifications and safety standards.
- Documentation:Keeping accurate records of services repairs and parts usage.
- Mentorship:Guiding apprentices and providing technical support to junior staff.
- Customer Service:Explaining technical issues and repair recommendations to service advisors or customers.
- Training: maintaining the training as required by dealerships manufacturer.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Certification:Valid Journeyman Technician license or equivalent such as a Red Seal certification.
- Experience:Proven experience in automotive or heavy-duty repair (often 3-5 years).
- Technical Skills:Deep knowledge of vehicle systems diagnostic tools and software.
- Physical Ability:Ability to lift heavy equipment and work in physically demanding environments.
- Communication:Strong verbal and written skills for reporting and customer interaction.
Typical Working Conditions
- Work is typically done in a shop or dealership environment.
- Frequent exposure to noise fumes and dirt.
