Position summary

The Medical Technician / Phlebotomist provides comprehensive phlebotomy services for veterans across inpatient outpatient emergency and STAT settings supporting timely and accurate laboratory testing and high-quality patient care. This role is responsible for safe specimen collection processing and preparation in accordance with VA standards laboratory protocols and infection control and privacy requirements.

Key responsibilities
  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection for inpatients (ward rounds) outpatients Emergency Department patients and STAT/ASAP/timed draws as ordered.

  • Verify patient identity using approved identifiers explain procedures and ensure patient comfort and safety during blood collection.

  • Correctly label handle and transport specimens according to VA and laboratory protocols including special handling requirements.

  • Process and prepare specimens for internal testing and external reference laboratory send-outs (centrifugation aliquoting packaging and documentation).

  • Maintain cleanliness organization and appropriate stock of supplies in phlebotomy and specimen processing areas.

  • Follow infection control standard precautions and safety policies including proper use of PPE and sharps-handling procedures.

  • Protect patient privacy and information security in alignment with VA VHA and HIPAA regulations.

  • Collaborate with laboratory staff nursing staff and providers to support timely collections resolve collection issues and ensure high-quality laboratory service.

Mandatory qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of recent phlebotomy experience in hospital or clinical settings.

  • Fluent in spoken and written English.

  • Ability to work varied shifts within 5:30 AM 11:30 PM including evenings and limited weekends/holidays; no night shifts or on-call required.

Health and compliance requirements

(To be completed within 5 days of hire in line with VA policy)

  • Negative TB screening (TST or IGRA).

  • Proof of immunity to Measles Mumps Rubella and Varicella.

  • Vaccinations: Tdap annual Influenza and full COVID-19 vaccination per current VA and federal guidelines.

  • Hepatitis B vaccination series completion or signed declination with appropriate test results.

Required training
  • BLS or ACLS with renewal every 2 years.

  • VA Privacy & Information Security Training (annual).

  • VHA Privacy & HIPAA-focused Training (annual).

Candidate profile
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required.

  • Experience: 3 years recent phlebotomy experience (task order requirement) aligning with mid-senior level practice expectations.

  • Seniority Level: Mid-Senior; no formal management experience required.

  • Willingness to move between inpatient units outpatient clinics and ED within the facility as needed.
