Locations:Mid-Atlantic National Capital Region and Florida sites

About the Role

The Public Safety Corporal plays a critical leadership role within the Public Safety Department. This position supports daily security operations responds to incidents assists with emergency procedures and provides guidance to Public Safety Officers. Acting as the shift leader when senior staff are unavailable the Corporal helps maintain a safe and secure environment for patients staff and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily supervision and direction to Public Safety Officers including training and scheduling.

  • Serve as shift leader in the absence of a Sergeant or higher-ranking officer.

  • Patrol hospital buildings grounds and critical areas to ensure ongoing safety and security.

  • Respond to emergencies incidents and alarms coordinating appropriate actions.

  • Oversee access control procedures including ID verification and visitor management.

  • Conduct and oversee investigations of incidents; prepare detailed and accurate reports.

  • Support emergency response procedures including evacuations and lockdowns.

  • Provide clear communication and assistance to patients visitors and clinical staff during incidents.

  • Participate in the training and professional development of Public Safety Officers.

  • Conduct safety drills to improve preparedness across departments.

  • Ensure compliance with local state and federal safety and security regulations.

  • Operate and monitor surveillance access control and alarm systems; report equipment issues.

  • Support the implementation of new security technologies and upgrades.

  • Maintain a visible professional customer-servicefocused presence throughout the facility.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Minimum 3 years of experiencein security or law enforcement (healthcare preferred).

  • Supervisory or leadership experience strongly preferred.

  • Strong leadership communication and decision-making skills.

  • Ability to stay calm and lead others during high-stress or emergency situations.

  • Proficiency with security technology and incident reporting systems.

  • Must be at least21 years old(exceptions for candidates with military law enforcement or comparable healthcare security experience).

  • Ability to meet physical job demands:

    • Prolonged standing and walking

    • Occasional running rapid stair climbing

    • Restraining individuals as part of a team

    • Lifting 50 lbs or more

Licensure & Certification Requirements

  • Valid drivers licensewith acceptable MVR and SambaSafety scores.

  • Post-hire training required: CPR Stop the Bleed Narcan de-escalation.

  • Healthcare security certifications (CHPA CHSO) preferred.

Site-Specific Licensure

  • Sibley Memorial Hospital:DC Security Officer License (must apply within 2 weeks; obtain within 45 days).

  • All Childrens Hospital:Florida Security D License (obtain within 180 days; renew every 2 years).

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to noise temperature changes and indoor/outdoor environments.

  • Frequent walking/standing for long periods; bending reaching and physical intervention as needed.

  • Use of security systems surveillance alarms and weapons detection equipment.
