Position Overview

This position is accountable for assisting the Laboratory Supervisor and Senior Laboratory Technician inconducting laboratory testing of all soils aggregates Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) and Hot Mix Asphalt(HMA) samples used in the construction and maintenance of various federally and state funded highways andother structures and to ensure that all the tested materials conform to the requirements of the current StandardSpecifications and Special Provisions. It is also accountable for the calibrations operation and themaintenance of various laboratory equipment used for the testing.

Essential Functions

  • Ensures that samples received are tested and reported with completeness accuracy and timeliness.
  • Maintains familiarity with the latest changes in specifications and testing procedures to ensure effective recording or plotting the finding of said tests.
  • Assists the Geotechnical Engineer and Mixture Control Engineer with various highly complicated tests.
  • Supervises the laboratory in the absence of the Laboratory Supervisor Senior Laboratory Technician and the other Laboratory Technician.
  • Issues receives repairs and calibrates field testing equipment per the Illinois Manual of Test Procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS thirty months of engineering experience OR six years of engineering experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of materials testing and laboratory testing equipment.
  • Knowledge of QC/QA program and familiar with HMA PCC.
  • Ability to operate physical laboratory testing equipment.

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid drivers license.
  • Successful completion of the following training classes within 24 months of assuming the position: IDOT Quality Management Training Program courses CET 020 Mixture Aggregate Technician (3 days) CET 029 Hot Mix Asphalt Level 1 (5 days) and CET 030 Portland Cement Concrete Level 1 (3 days) and the IDOT Specific Task Training Program Course S-33 Soils Field Testing and Inspection.
  • Occasional districtwide travel travel to Missouri labs and seasonal shiftwork possible.
  • Heavy and repetitive lifting of 40 - 50 lbs.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background check.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical.
