The Community Engagement and Outreach Worker as part of the YWCA Camping & Outdoor Education program team plays a vital role by building bridges between the camp partner organizations and the diverse communities of Toronto. This position ensures that all campers feel supported year-round with meaningful engagement both in the city during the off season and at camp during the summer. The position is responsible for assisting in the delivery of appropriate and diverse cultural programming and training and providing hands-on support to summer camp operations.

ABOUT YWCA TORONTO CAMP TAPAWINGO
Camp Tapawingo is a summer camp near Parry Sound which offers carefully developed programming in a relaxed camp setting on beautiful Georgian Bay. Girls and gender diverse youth thrive as they develop leadership skills gain confidence and embark on new experiences and fun adventures. YWCA Toronto is committed to increasing Inclusion Diversity Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) within Camp Tapawingo programs and services. We aspire to be a camp representative of Torontos diverse community and to provide a welcoming space where camp participants families counsellors-in-training and staff feel safe and valued. We provide financial assistance to help remove barriers for girls and gender diverse youth to access the outdoors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead community outreach by building strong partnerships with schools families and local organizations;
  • Support camper and staff recruitment and enrollment processes with particular attention to communities historically excluded from outdoor and camp opportunities;
  • Serve as a compassionate point of contact for families helping them navigate resources camp readiness financial assistance and other needs;
  • Represent the camp at community events workshops and partner meetings;
  • Design and deliver appropriate programming that celebrates diversity and fosters belonging both at camp and in the city;
  • Research and identify best practices and recommend I.D.E.A. strategies and actions for the program;
  • Provide hands on support to camp operations including orientation emergency procedures site set up and activity facilitation;
  • Contribute to program administration in all seasons including data collection social media newsletters and budget supports;
  • Live on-site at camp from June until September and spring and fall as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • In-depth knowledge of an academic discipline normally acquired through an Undergraduate degree in Child and Youth Work Social Work Education or Recreation degree (Cases for Equivalency will be considered);
  • 5 to 7 years experience working with girls and gender-diverse youth in an overnight camp setting;
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with youth families and partner organizations;
  • Comfort working outdoors in an overnight summer camp environment;
  • Knowledge of cultural programming equity and inclusion practices;
  • Ability to work independently in the city during off-season and collaboratively in a camp environment during summer;
  • Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings/weekends during the school year and full-time onsite during the camping season;
  • Demonstrated good judgement flexibility creativity and enthusiasm for youth development;
  • Valid drivers license;
  • CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain;
  • Must possess excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office applications (Word Excel Outlook and PowerPoint) the Internet MS Teams Campbrain or other camp registration software or Canva;
  • Good organizational skills and strong attention to detail and proven ability to meet deadlines;
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Required to travel at least 20% of the time
  • Vacation may not be taken during the on-site time at camp.

Note: This position is required to live on-site at YWCA Camp Tapawingo from June until end of August as well as additional time in the spring and fall as needed. Room & Board provided while at camp.
