The Opportunity:
The Washington State University (WSU) Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) seeks to fill an 85% FTE continuous career track assistant or associate professor faculty position as an Educator in Simulation-Based Education (SBE). The successful applicant will join a dedicated team of faculty and staff that prioritizes veterinary student success through active learning in a safe environment. Our SBE program is accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and is specifically designed to advance the education of veterinary students and trainees. Instruction in this program involves models mannequins task-trainers trained actors (simulated participants) immersive (total environment) simulation and technology.
Responsibilities for all Ranks:
This position will contribute significantly to the day-to-day instruction assessment and support of learners in the clinical and professional skills curriculum. Content areas include basic surgery skills anesthesia diagnostic procedures client and team communication imaging dentistry biosecurity triage and resuscitation along with other areas geared to developing new-graduate level competency.
Involvement in the core curricular elements is required and will vary based on time of year and areas of focus. The majority of SBE instruction is in the DVM Year 1 through 3. This position will also provide support to courses and electives who host laboratories in SBE student club events where indicated and outreach or continuing education events. Contributions to conceptualizing and validating models creation of case materials and enhancement and expansion of instructional modules will be an important but less intensive area of focus. As SBE is an area of high activity for fundraising and student recruitment this position will also require participation in and/or oversight for outreach tours and student-led laboratories. Core requirements include role modeling behaviors we expect of our learners and actively contributing to SBE team meetings programming and staff development.
Educators will be actively engaged with student instruction 60-80% of a typical work week with the remaining time devoted to preparation skill development service and other areas of interest. Instructional design and enhancement will encompass approximately 10% of efforts as will promotion and outreach. On-going supported professional development as an educator is required.
Educators will have responsibility for supervision training and support of peer instructors (DVM students who assist in providing instruction during Clinical Skills Laboratory open sessions). Evening and weekend program support is expected on occasion with advanced notice. This time will be off set from work week expectations when possible. Enjoy 8 weeks off during the summer season between June 1 and July 31st .

Annual Salary:
$106250 - $123250 (85% FTE) Commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Qualifications for all Ranks:
The successful candidate must have a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree (VMD BVSc) with a minimum of 3 years clinical experience. Applicants must have a commitment to education. Although not required experience in teaching in a variety of contexts training in education and an interest in medical education research are all desirable.
The successful applicant should be able to effectively communicate and work collegially and collaboratively with people from all backgrounds and demonstrate a commitment and relevant ability to foster community outreach access and engagement.
Considerations regarding rank will be determined based on the interests and qualifications of the candidate. Applicants for associate professor must have a higher level of clinical and teaching experience scholarship productivity and national or international recognition as compared to assistant professor applicants.
