Job Summary

Sturgeon County is recruitment for seasonal full-time (approximately 17 weeks May 4 - August 28 2026) Engineering Students.

The Engineering Student supports the Transportation and Engineering Services departments program delivery and initiatives by assisting with general duties which include (but are not limited to): project management data collection inspections reporting and research. Each student position has specific primary and secondary responsibilities with all students also collaborating as required to ensure the successful completion of all objectives assigned to the collective group of Engineering Students across program areas.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Position 1: Project and Inspection Support

Primary Responsibilities (60%):

  • Assist with project delivery including site coordination inspections and design support
  • Conduct warranty inspections and monitoring for completed Capital Projects
  • Observe construction activities to ensure adherence to project plans and safety requirements
  • Maintain and update project records and document project progress

Secondary Responsibilities (40%):

  • Participate in rail crossing assessments and inspections
  • Assist with traffic-related project tasks and field data collection as assigned
  • Support signage inspection as assigned and as time allows

Position 2: Drainage Asset Management

Primary Responsibilities (80%):

  • Conduct inspections of County drainage infrastructure focusing on culvert and registered ditches as part of a five-year inspection cycle
  • Survey/document asset condition and input data into GIS to support asset management and operational/capital work planning
  • Support Transportation and Engineering Staff with drainage surveys and evaluations as required

Secondary Responsibilities (20%):

  • Assist with roadside infrastructure inspections as required
  • Support the drainage element of Capital Project delivery
  • Contribute to project delivery support as required

Position 3: Traffic Data Collection

Primary Responsibilities (80%):

  • Complete traffic counts and intersection assessments as part of the Traffic Data Program
  • Manage the scheduling and execution of data collection to ensure that all required counts are collected in alignment with the planned inspection cycle
  • Process and analyze traffic data and input into GIS to support Capital Planning and other County program areas
  • Operate and troubleshoot traffic counting hardware and software

Secondary Responsibilities (20%):

  • Assist with intersection studies and other traffic related tasks as required
  • Support project planning and engineering specifically in relation to traffic impacts on design

Position 4: Capital Program and Infrastructure Support

Primary Responsibilities (80%):

  • Work collaboratively with the Traffic Data Collection Student as well as the Drainage Asset Management Student to ensure that inspection and data collection objectives for each area are achieved
  • Independently manage guardrail condition inspection and GIS data entry
  • Assist with curb and gutter assessments as required
  • Broadly support infrastructure data collection across all areas and provide program delivery support as required.
  • Assist with project delivery including site coordination inspections and design support.
  • Observe construction activities to ensure adherence to capital project plans and safety requirements.

Secondary Responsibilities (20%):

  • Provide flagging and safety support to other students as required
  • Support signage and rail cross inspections as time allows

General Responsibilities (All positions)

  • Assists Transportation and Engineering staff as required and work collaboratively with the other Engineering Students as a team to ensure the successful completion of all assigned tasks
  • Update and development of a year-end report/student manual as required to assist future Engineering students with their role
  • Performs other related duties as required by the Supervisor.
  • Adheres to all of Sturgeon Countys policies bylaws procedures and processes as well as aligns work to the Sturgeon County values.
  • Adheres to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.

KNOWLEDGE EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS SKILLS ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Basic understanding of project management traffic monitoring drainage principles types of roadside infrastructure and surveying as required for each role
  • Familiar with municipal infrastructure inspection and data collection techniques for various municipal assets as applicable

  • Completion of some post-secondary studies in Civil Engineering or a related field
  • Valid class 5 drivers license with an acceptable Drivers Abstract and a Defensive Driving Certification.
  • Strong organizational analytical and problem-solving skills to support the duties of each role
  • Excellent communication and reporting skills and ability to work effectively in both a field and office environment
  • Ability to accurately perform work including data collection inspections and interpretation of plans and technical information as required

Assets:

  • Knowledge of municipal infrastructure including inspection methods and construction practices
  • Familiarity with GIS and AutoCAD to support data collection and project tasks
  • Relevant completed engineering coursework related to the positions (i.e. Transportation Engineering Construction Management Water Resources etc)
  • Defensive Driving Certificate
  • Emergency First Aid Certificate
  • Ability to operate a pickup truck on gravel roads and navigate the rural road system considered a strong asset.
  • Advanced data analysis and visualization skills
  • Hands-on experience with inspections and data collection
  • Prior experience with municipal infrastructure engineering and project delivery.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL EFFORTS:

  • Primarily based on-site at field locations with occasional work in an office or office-like environment.
  • Deadline driven working environment which involves multitasking managing priorities and tracking progress.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a field environment including walking over uneven terrain in various weather conditions.
  • This position may have longer periods of time sitting/standing at a desk with the ability to focus and concentrate on the task at hand.
