Our programme offers an exciting opportunity for aspiring engineers to gain hands-on experience and develop their skills in a dynamic and supportive environment. As an engineering cadet you will work alongside experienced professionals on various projects and contracts contributing to innovative solutions and sustainable practices.

EngineeringCadet Positions Nationwide

Applications are now open for the Downer Engineering Cadet programme! Cadetships are available around the country and are open to people who are:

Interested in commencing study towards your Diploma in Civil Engineering (NZDE) while gaining practical knowledge (we pay for your training!)
Currently in your final year of study for the Diploma in Civil Engineering (NZDE) and will be ready to start full-time work in January 2026
An experienced tradesperson keen to change careers and start a Diploma in Civil Engineering

Cadet Programme Details

Duration: The programme takes between 2.5 to 4 years to complete depending on your academic status at the time of commencing.

Networking:Regular meetings to share experiences with other cadets and network with business managers.

Support:Financial and leave allocation to support academic achievement.

Rotations:Structured rotation plan ensuring a comprehensive range of roading and construction knowledge and experiences.

Graduation:Placement in an entry-level engineering role upon completion of the programme

Locations: Waikato Dunedin Wellington Auckland and Tararua.
Cadetship starts: 26^th January2026 (though you can start working with us before then)

Hands-on Experience: Engage in both onsite and office work to support our projects.

Construction site activities
Transport Maintenance contracts
Project Management
Estimating
Quality Assurance monitoring and reporting
Laboratory and Road Science
Comprehensive training and development program
Mentorship from experienced professionals

Legal eligibility to work in New Zealand.
Class 1 Drivers Licence or be ready to sit your Class 1 Licence
