Position Overview

Under the general direction of the Health Services Director & Manager and while demonstrating a commitment to the Mission Values and Management Philosophy of St. Boniface Hospital and as part of the multi-disciplinary team the Nurse Practitioner (NP) is responsible for:

  1. Applying advanced nursing and medical theory to the provision of clinical care autonomously ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests prescribing pharmacologic agents and performing minor invasive procedures.
  2. Applying current/relevant nursing and medical theory which allows for contribution to knowledge development and involvement in advancing the nursing profession.
  3. Incorporating medical knowledge and advanced nursing knowledge; integrating this knowledge and experiential base into clinical practice.
  4. Demonstrating competence to practice autonomously in the implementation of strategies to promote health and prevent illness demonstrating proficiency in planning implementing and evaluating complex care and demonstrating competence to teach others.
  5. Providing problem-solving among staff or between staff and patients/residents/clients and with physicians and multidisciplinary team.
  6. Applying skills in consultation collaboration and systems management in providing effective care.
  7. Complimenting physician services in the delivery of comprehensive health care.

Nurse Practitioners have the authority to provide extended practice nursing care if they are competent to provide that care the care is endorsed in the practice setting and is within the scope of nursing practice as defined by the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).

Experience

  • Minimum five (5) years recent nursing experience (program specific) with a related clinical population combining in-depth nursing theory clinical practice consultation education and research with the delivery of health care services required.
  • Experience in the following wound care management an asset (ex. Wound Care/Diabetic Foot patient population/Indigenous patient population; Remote Northern Health Nursing/Dialysis Patient Population; Vascular Surgery Nursing; WRHA/SWAT (Skin/Wound/Assessment/Treatment) Team Wound Care; Performing & interpreting Ankle Brachial Index (ABIs).

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Current RN (EP) registration with CRNM required.
  • Masters degree in Nursing Nurse Practitioner Stream or equivalent educational preparation as approved by CRNM required.
  • Education in wound care management an asset (ex. ET Nurse/Wound Care Certificate Wounds Canada Wound Care Certificates Nursing Foot Care Course Certificate IIWCC Wound Care Course).

** Must be eligible for academic appointment with the University of Manitoba.

SPECIAL TRAINING/SKILLS:
Advanced nursing care knowledge related to health assessment diagnostics pharmacotherapeutics and invasive and minor surgical procedures required.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Current CRNM registration required.
  • Active participation in professional associations e.g. Association of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM) preferred.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Knowledge of computer systems and proficiency in the use of common software including word processing email and internet applications required.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
