General Description and Goals:

Salem Public Schools is committed to the academic success of all Multilingual Learners (MLs) entering grades preK-12. The English Language Learning Department in the Salem Public Schools seeks a bilingual professional with experience teaching supporting and connecting English Learners and their families to academic resources. The Bilingual Language Evaluator and EL Specialist will be responsible for assessing entering ELLs at the Parent Information Center as well as working with EL families to understand and participate in the school assignment policy. Under the direction of the ELL Director the Bilingual Language Evaluator and EL Specialist will also support recruitment and enrollment of incoming kindergarten students to the new dual language program. This is a unique and exciting opportunity for a bilingual educator who is deeply invested in making a difference in the lives of students families and the community.

What Youll Do:

  1. Plan and administer in a time sensitive manner comprehensive and thorough assessment of the four modalities of English native language literacy and numeracy for entering ELs in grades PreK-12.
  2. Meet with families and respond to questions regarding the application and registration processes as well as advocate and provide information about community resources and supports.
  3. Meet with families to explain the Multilingual Learner programs goals and results of English and when appropriate native language assessments.
  4. Report assessment results to instructional teams in Multilingual Learner settings.
  5. Assist the ML Director in recruitment and registration of native Spanish and English speakers for the dual language program.
  6. Additional duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  1. Current or former educator license issued by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education highly preferred
  2. Bachelors Degree in related area highly preferred
  3. Bilingual and Bi-literate in English/ Spanish.
  4. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills with ability to focus on the overall mission while also attending to details and follow-up activities.
  5. Strong communication skills including oral and written proficiency in English and in a second or third language.
  6. Demonstrated use of technology.
  7. Knowledge of and experience working in multicultural settings
  8. Bilingual candidates and candidates of color strongly encouraged to apply
  9. Current authorization to work in the United States

Preferred:

  1. English as a Second Language license.
  2. Three or more years of successful urban teaching experience with English language learners.
  3. Proficiency in a third target language (Portuguese Albanian Vietnamese)
  4. Strong background knowledge of assessments for ELLs in grades Pre K-12.
  5. Experience working with ELs with learning disabilities.

Salary: $35/hour Does not include benefits.
