Context and Role

Endometriosis remains neglected in India lacking attention in government policies and research funding despite affecting approximately 42 million women. Current treatments often fall short in providing adequate relief highlighting the need for more focused research and interventions. Furthermore there is a dearth of knowledge regarding the economic burden of endometriosis on affected individuals and their families with out-of-pocket expenses being a significant contributor to the overall cost of illness. Research into the effectiveness of psychological interventions tailored to Indian womens diverse experiences is essential.

The proposed study intend to co-develop psychological intervention and test its feasibility in reducing depression and improving quality of life in women with endometriosis and to investigate economic burden of endometriosis. The proposed intervention- Adapting to a Better Life with Endometriosis (ABLE) will be co-developed and implemented among adult women (18-49 years) seeking treatment for endometriosis from two specialist hospitals in India. The ABLE intervention will be based on the Behavioral Activation Treatment for Depression (BATD) module incorporating patient education on endometriosis group therapy and mindfulness activities and will be delivered through trained Clinical Psychologists at each study addition to evaluating the interventions efficacy we aim to conduct an incremental financial cost analysis to ascertain the cost of its implementation. Additionally the total economic burden of endometriosis including out-of-pocket expenses and time-related losses and coping strategies will be estimated.

The Clinical Psychologist recruited at Kasturba Medical College will deliver the Behavioural Activation Treatment for Depression (BATD)-based group intervention integrating education on endometriosis group therapy and mindfulness activities.
