Job Summary

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Merchandising Compliance Manager will report directly to the Senior Associate General Counsel. You will serve as the primary compliance business partner to the merchandising organization ensuring adherence to all applicable laws regulations and company standards across merchandising operations. The position will require specialized expertise in environmental compliance vendor relations and marketing compliance while supporting broader merchandising compliance initiatives. This position will be based in Springfield Missouri.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review and draft compliance policies procedures and vendor guides to drive compliance with state federal and international regulations.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments in environmental compliance consumer protection and retail regulations; proactively identify and assess compliance risks and opportunities; advise internal business partners regarding same.
  • Manage Canada regulatory compliance including ECCC (Health Canada) programs EPR Canada FPR Plastic registry and Safe Food for Canadians Act.
  • Develop and manage US EPR compliance programs for multiple states and California environmental law requirements.
  • Develop and implement vendor compliance policies and procedures in collaboration with cross-functional teams including product development planning logistics and quality assurance.
  • Review marketing communications including presentations website content promotional materials and advertising content for regulatory compliance.
  • Serve as primary compliance contact for merchants promotional operations retail specialists marketing vendor relations and other merchandising functions.
  • Assist in developing preparing and providing training to internal business partners on various compliance topics.
  • Oversee vendor contract compliance terms and manage vendor onboarding requirements for national brands.
  • Represent the company in compliance-related administrative matters and regulatory inquiries.
  • Identify compliance program gaps and spearhead projects to fill each gap as needed.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • J.D. or Masters degree in Environmental Law Regulatory Affairs Business Administration or related field.
  • Experience in retail or consumer products industry.
  • Knowledge of Canadian regulatory requirements (Health Canada ECCC).
  • Familiarity with sustainability and other extended producer responsibility initiatives and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with promotional compliance and pricing regulations.
  • Understanding of retail and promotional operations.
  • Experience developing policies guidelines and operational procedures.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITY:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent analysis reasoning and writing skills including the ability to quickly integrate and synthesize facts and regulations to make sound compliance decisions in compressed timeframes.
  • Deep understanding of compliance frameworks and ability to translate complex regulatory requirements into practical business guidance.
  • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple time-sensitive issues involving business partners in various locations.
  • Ability to provide direct and timely advice and counseling to business clients at various levels of the organization.
  • Ability to think strategically and evaluate potential risks to the company including economic legal and reputational.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; team player who is flexible and adaptable.
  • Strong understanding of vendor compliance standards quality assurance processes and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to effectively identify and prioritize the most critical tasks.
  • Ability to comprehend complex regulations and apply to practical use cases.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • 5% - Limited travel when necessary

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Regular computer work and sitting
  • Occasional walking standing and lifting
  • Ability to attend meetings and presentations

INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT:

Develops operational compliance programs policies and procedures for merchandising compliance matters under the guidance of the legal department. Makes independent decisions on day-to-day compliance issues within established parameters and escalates matters of legal significance to the Senior Associate General Counsel. Requires independent judgment and problem solving of complex merchandising compliance and regulatory issues while coordinating with legal counsel on matters requiring legal interpretation.
