Job Summary

The Orthodontics department at the College of Dentistry is looking for a full-time Dental Assistant!

Responsibilities:

  • Keep an efficient orthodontic faculty and/or Graduate clinic flow:
    oAssist chairside in the provision of oral/orthodontic healthcare to all patients including young children and children with special needs.
    oAssist chairside with banding bonding and removal of appliances
    oTakes intra and extra oral photographs expose/process radiographs and CBCTs as requested under OSHA guidelines.
    oHelp load digital records into the digital software for insurance submission
    oHelp place separators change arch wires under OSHA guidelines.
    oSet up orthodontic trays instruments and equipment for procedures.
  • Perform routine daily maintenance of dental equipment as well as preparing orthodontics instruments for sterilization per OSHA guidelines.
  • Keep faculty and/or orthodontic graduate clinics areas clean including deep cleaning of units.
  • Restock sterilized and new equipment/supplies for faculty and/or orthodontic graduate clinic units. Inventory supplies and request reorders as needed.
  • Communicate with the lab to ensure that appliances and retainers are ready for delivery and /or follow up with the front desk when patients fail to collect their appliances.
  • Explain clinical operation policies and procedures to students faculty and newly employed dental assistants.
  • Direct patients to complete patient consent forms; direct to Ortho Business Office for payments.
  • Assist with mixing of materials and facilitate impression taking or intraoral scanning.
  • Help direct new patients to the clinics or active patients to available chairs in situations of patient overflow.
  • Enter chart codes and notes for orthodontic procedures.

Salary: $46604.16 (Pay Grade: 08)

An advanced starting salary may be possible based on exceptional qualifications.

Schedule: Monday Friday 8:00am 5:00pm. May require occasional overtime.

Work Location: On-Site

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Successful completion of a CODA accredited dental assistance program or one-year full time equivalency in chairside assistant experience assisting in four-handed method of dentistry.
  • Must have a current certificate of registration to practice as a dental assistant issued by the Iowa Board of Dental Examiners. (QDA)
  • Must possess current Iowa certificate of proficiency in dental radiography. (QDA)
  • No additional work experience beyond the requirements for this position.
  • May require Expanded Functions (EF-1 and/or EF-2) based on specific needs assigned by provider.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATONS:

  • Experience with electronic health record.
  • Experience taking digital records (e.g. intraoral scanning).
  • Orthodontic experience in a clinic setting.
  • Experience with children/adolescents.
  • Experience working with individuals with craniofacial anomalies and/or special needs.
  • Excellent verbal written and interpersonal communication skills.
