The Town of Fort Myers Beach is seeking a dedicated and community-oriented Neighborhood Services Ranger to join our team. This full-time position plays an important role in supporting communitys quality of life promoting community standards and serving as a helpful visible presence throughout the island.

Position Summary

The Neighborhood Services Ranger plays a central role in maintaining the safety cleanliness and order of the island while fostering positive relationships with residents and visitors. Responsibilities include patrolling all areas within the Towns jurisdiction and neighborhoods from bay to beach providing immediate response services enforcing local laws related to parking and island activities assisting with first aid and shallow water rescues maintaining a proactive security presence and representing the Towns brand values.


This is a full-time position with a requirement to work one weekend day per week.


Responsibilities and Reporting During an Emergency Situation: If assigned employees in this classification will be required to report and carry out duties as directed for the duration of an emergency. Depending on the nature of the emergency this may require working around the clock for several days on short notice.


  • Conduct proactive patrols throughout all areas within the Towns jurisdiction from bay to beach to ensure public safety promote compliance with Town Code and identify address and report any infractions or suspicious activity. While on patrol document areas of concern by completing detailed incident reports for follow-up and recordkeeping.
  • Provide a highly visible presence to educate and inform the public and deter improper activity.
  • Serve as a traffic control officer to maintain safe efficient traffic flow mitigate congestion and respond to traffic disruptions.
  • Provide immediate first aid care with upgraded training and equipment; assist in emergency situations as a first responder until relieved by law enforcement or EMS. Conduct shallow water rescues as trained and equipped in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard.
  • Initiate contact with suspicious activity maintain vigilant patrols and coordinate with LCSO for criminal matters while acting as trained witnesses and securing crime scenes when necessary.
  • Apply basic verbal de-escalation techniques during potential conflicts supporting public safety through non-violent intervention methods.
  • Assist in critical incident deployments scene control and crowd management at major events or emergencies.
  • Monitor and inspect municipal properties to ensure security and proper functioning reporting any concerns promptly.
  • Complete full and detailed incident reports in a timely and professional manner maintaining accurate documentation.
  • Address disputes or concerns among visitors aiming to de-escalate conflicts amicably; seek law enforcement support as needed.
  • Issue parking citations as necessary focusing first on education and public safety.
  • Monitor and address littering and trash disposal issues; encourage recycling and proper environmental practices.
  • Report missing signage hazardous conditions and other safety concerns to the Emergency Services Director.
  • Operate Town vehicles including all-terrain vehicles as assigned.
  • Assist during emergency situations including hurricanes evacuations and post-storm recovery efforts.
  • Attend all assigned meetings trainings and Town events.
  • Maintain all Town-issued equipment and uniforms in proper condition.
  • Follow chain-of-command procedures to ensure organizational effectiveness.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education Certification and Experience:

  • High school diploma/GED; and
  • Five (5) years of community public safety or customer service-related experience.
  • FEMA Incident Command System (ICS) and National Incident Management System (NIMS) Training: IS-100.C IS-200.C IS-700.B IS-800 in good standing or ability to obtain certification within 3 months of hire.
  • Parking Enforcement Specialist in the State of Florida Certification or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment and maintain that certification.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Drivers License with an acceptable driving record.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of local laws and regulations applicable to beach activities parking and community services.
  • Basic knowledge of first aid shallow water rescue techniques and critical incident scene control.
  • Basic knowledge of crime scene preservation practices.
  • Knowledge of verbal de-escalation strategies (verbal judo) to mitigate conflicts and maintain public order.
  • Knowledge of the tasks tools and materials associated with parking enforcement and vehicle operations.
  • Familiarity with patrol procedures witness protocols and suspicious activity reporting.
  • Skills in detailed incident reporting and documentation.
  • Strong customer service and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment under pressure.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret safety issues and respond accordingly.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism tact and courtesy in confrontational or emergency situations.
  • Ability to operate various vehicles and equipment including ATVs.
  • Ability to maintain a high standard of personal and professional integrity at all times.
  • Physical fitness sufficient for extended patrolling in various conditions.
  • Ability and willingness to work on weekends and during high-demand events.

Physical Requirements:

  • Significant standing walking moving climbing carrying bending and kneeling. Ability to walk and patrol the beach for extended periods including on sandy terrain.
  • Some crawling reaching handling sitting pushing and pulling bending stooping and digging.
  • Capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds of equipment or beach debris.
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various related vehicles and machinery associated with job requirements.
  • Mobility to navigate beach areas including uneven surfaces and sand dunes.

Environmental Requirements:

  • Ability to perform strenuous work in varying and adverse weather conditions including heat cold rain and potentially dangerous environments.

Sensory Requirements:

  • Task requires sound perception and discrimination.
  • Task requires visual perception and discrimination.
  • Task requires oral communications ability.
