The Division of Microbiology and Immunology within the Emory National Primate Research Center at Emory University in Atlanta GA is looking for enthusiastic creative and highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellows to join the laboratory of Dr. Mirko Paiardini. Our laboratory is focused on characterizing cellular and anatomical niches of HIV persistence which we use to inform immunotherapy-based strategies to facilitate viral control following antiretroviral therapy (ART) cessation. Using SIV infected non-human primates (NHPs) as a comparative model of HIV pathogenesis in combination with techniques such as high-parameter flow cytometry and ex vivo T cell functional assays we have investigated and evaluated novel therapeutic interventions to reduce the viral reservoir content in hope of developing a strategy towards sustained viral remission in the absence of partnership with Merck our laboratory is a core component of the Enterprise for Research and Advocacy to Stop and Eradicate (ERASE) HIV Collaboratory.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career.
• The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc.
• Designs and evaluates experiments.
• Develops new ideas that promote current research.
• Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator.
• May be responsible for operation of specific equipment.
• May teach techniques to others train and supervise research staff.
• Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee.
• The initial appointment is for one year renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D. M.D. ScD. D.V.M. DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills.
• The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues.
• Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.

PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience with independently designing experiments and coordination of research activity with multi-disciplinary teams.
• Ability to effectively communicate scientific findings such as compiling data and recording results of studies for publications grant applications and conference/seminar presentations.
• Knowledge of HIV/SIV immunology animal models and BSL-2 standard operating procedures including high-parameter flow cytometry tissue processing and cell culture.
• Proficiency with analysis and data visualization tools (GraphPad Prism OMIQ FlowJo and/or RStudio).

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

• Work is performed in a BSL-2 laboratory environment and requires work with blood and tissues.
• Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks which requires following basic safety precautions.
• Requires the ability to bend kneel and/or squat.
