Job Summary

Classification Minimum Requirements:

Bachelors degree in an appropriate area and four years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with municipal organization and community related programs pertaining to the assigned County department.

Basic understanding of program to support.

Written and oral communication skills to include the ability to introduce program(s) to various audiences.

Ability to prepare promotional materials customized to programs needs.

Job Description:

Develop conduct coordinate evaluate and report on Florida-Friendly Landscaping educational programs attended by urban audiences new and existing residents community gardeners teachers volunteers advisory committees and others.

Provide technical support review landscape and irrigation plans and train the trainer programs showing How to implement Florida-Friendly Landscaping with Master Gardener volunteers community homeowner associations demonstration gardens and public landscaping.

Collaborate with the horticulture team with planning marketing teaching support for horticultural (in-office or in-the-field) customers activities and programs using extension methods and multi-media.

Teach water conservation and efficient irrigation practices to homeowners and community associations teach Horticultural Best Management practices (Green Industries Best Management Practices) for water resource protection. Conduct rain barrel programs teaching the use of rainwater collection. Keep an inventory of rain barrels and attachments available for the public to purchase. Educate the public on composting and the uses of compost. Will be required to drive for trainings.

OTHER CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POSITION:

Work is primarily performed in an indoor climate-controlled environment and is nearly absent from disagreeable elements (e.g. irate customers extreme noise heat odors heights and/or dust). There is little or no risk related to physical and/or mental health and safety associated with this position. Walking sitting hearing seeing up close talking standing finger movement repetitive motions. Dependent upon position assignment may frequently lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.

SUPERVISION:

Verbal and written instructions for training purposes program delivery and procedural forms. Additional instructions on an as-needed basis. Must be able to work independently and on a team.

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE:

Typical schedule is Monday through Friday 8:00am 5:00pm. However this position will require flex scheduling to include working evenings and weekends for classes.

REQUIRED LICENSES CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF LAW:

Maintain valid Florida drivers license

Obtain within one (1) year:

Green Industry Best Management Practices Trainer

FDACS Pesticide Applicator License Holder

Complete Florida-Friendly Landscaping Certifications

Become an FNGLA Horticultural Professional

POLICY MAKING AND/OR INTERPRETATION:

Use state and local Florida-Friendly Landscaping regulatory standards to interpret for individual homeowners organizations or community associations water resource protection.

Confer with the appropriate county or state regulatory authorities or responsible departments to uniformly apply Florida-Friendly Landscaping concepts and practices guided by local and state statues.

Suggest contractual environmental landscape management (ELM) changes and solutions to Community Association Boards and committees.

PROGRAM DIRECTION AND DEVELOPMENT:

Confer with a program advisory group and strategize with Community Services Community Development planners Water Utilities and Solid Waste division leaders to design and implement county-wide Florida-Friendly Landscaping outreach (marketing) materials and programs.

Collaborate with faculty agents and subject matter experts on program development and design. Review use of new learning/training technologies and assist with planning statewide conferences and train-the-trainer in-services.

COMMUNICATION:

Confer with extension staff horticulture multi-county agents and specialists to properly diagnose and confirm new or emerging plant or pest problems shared across county line

Document and report Florida-Friendly Landscaping accomplishments and impacts to county division leaders including those preparing the counties FDEP NPDES stormwater program permits.

Prepare environmental landscaping columns with the print media media interviews as subject matter specialist and represent Florida-Friendly Landscaping on radio shows.

MONETARY RESPONSIBILITY:

Collect registration fees for horticulture and Florida-Friendly Landscaping events and monitor program expenditures. Collect monies from sales of rain barrels.

CREATIVITY STRATEGY AND LEADERSHIP:

May take the lead on new program initiatives and serve as a subject matter expert on particular Florida-Friendly Landscaping concepts and practices.
