Performance Pay:

Available annually

New Hire Experience:

1% of the base hourly rate granted for each year of verified like experience (within ten years) beyond the requirement up to aten-year maximum

New Hire Education:

1% of the base hourly rate awarded for an AA or higher degree if not required for the position

Job Summary:

To provide therapy assistance to Speech Language Impaired students as defined by the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP); to assist in the assessment of students; and to provide written and verbal input to the SLP regarding formal documentation.

One full-time position will require experience working with AAC devices and providing classroom-based services. This candidate will determine the appropriate strategies and techniques students need to enable them to use their AAC systems or devices in order to maximize their communication potential in the classroom. Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct therapy assistance to students identified by the supervising Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) following written therapy plans IEPs or protocols developed by the SLP (See Arizona Department of Health Service guidelines for SLPAs.)
  • Assist the Speech Language Assistant (SLP) with informal documentation as directed by the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP)
  • Document student progress toward meeting established objectives as stated in the therapy plan IEP or protocol and report this information to the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP)
  • Assist the Speech Language Assistant (SLP) in the collecting and tallying of data for assessment purposes
  • Prepare and process record keeping and materials necessary for documentation to convey information to appropriate parties
  • Regular and on-time attendance required
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the work unit
  • Assists with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools

Required Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree in Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Program that adheres to The American Speech Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) guidelines or
  • Bachelors Degree in Communication Disorders Speech Pathology or Speech and Hearing Sciences

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Documented success working with children preferred

  • Valid Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) license issued by the Arizona Department of Health Services
  • English language (verbal and written) proficiency
  • Ability and interest in working with the non-traditional student
  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written)
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with special education and other district personnel
  • Ability and willingness to participate in professional growth and training activities

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Work primarily in public or private elementary middle or high schools
  • Collaborate with licensed Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) teachers special educators and other staff
  • Participate in IEP (Individualized Education Program) meetings as appropriate (often in a support capacity)
  • Some time is spent doing documentation material preparation or data entry
  • May need to carry therapy materials books or equipment (typically under 25 lbs.)
