Project description

Our subjective experience of the world is continuous. However it has been proposed that attention samples the input from our senses in roughly 7-8 discrete snapshots per second. This theory is supported by many studies but theoretical and methodological critiques have been raised and some researchers have not found supporting evidence. This project will systematically and rigorously test the theory of rhythmic attentional sampling in focused and divided attention in a series of experiments using a combination of electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings of frequency-tagged steady-state visual evoked potentials and behavioral measures in healthy human participants combined with quantitative modelling.

The successful candidate will be required to design program and conduct EEG-experiments analyze and interpret EEG and behavioral data and present results at conferences and in journal publications. This project is theoretically and technically sophisticated and a candidate with strong analytic and quantitative skills (programming digital signal processing modelling statistics) is sought.

The project involves collaboration with Prof. Marco Steinhauser (University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt Germany) and Dr. Ramakrishna Chakravarthi (University of Aberdeen UK).
