Job Summary: The Adult Psychiatric Registered Nurse provides specialized nursing care to adult patients experiencing acute psychiatric conditions behavioral health crises or co-occurring medical and psychiatric needs. This role requires strong therapeutic communication skills sound clinical judgment and the ability to maintain safety in a high-acuity mental health environment. The RN collaborates with psychiatrists social workers therapists and multidisciplinary teams to deliver structured patient-centered psychiatric care. This position is 36 hours per week night shift (7 PM 7:30 AM) and includes a 3 12 schedule.
Responsibilities
- Deliver nursing care to adult psychiatric patients including mental status assessments suicide risk evaluations and safety monitoring.
- Administer medications monitor therapeutic effects and manage potential side effects.
- Implement behavioral health interventions and de-escalation techniques using CPI/PMCS-required training.
- Maintain a safe therapeutic environment enforcing safety protocols and conducting routine checks.
- Document nursing assessments interventions and patient responses accurately (EPIC experience highly preferred).
- Collaborate with psychiatrists and behavioral health staff to develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Support patients in crisis through therapeutic communication and stabilization techniques.
- Participate in treatment team meetings shift handoffs and interdisciplinary care planning.
- Monitor for signs of escalation and intervene promptly to maintain safety for patients and staff.
- Educate patients and families on treatment plans medications coping strategies and discharge goals.
- Support the units workflow aligned with a census of approximately 16.9 patients in a 23-bed unit.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of psychiatric nursing experience in a hospital setting Required
- Minimum 2 years of overall RN experience Required
- CPI or PMCS Certification Required
- EPIC EMR experience highly preferred
- Strong de-escalation crisis management and therapeutic communication skills
Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Required
Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Required
- CPI or PMCS certification Required
License: Active New York State RN License Required
