The Des Moines Police Department is establishing an eligibility list for the position of Community Engagement Officer (Community Services Officer). This role focuses on strengthening connections between the department and the community through outreach communication and collaborative problem-solving.
Community Engagement Officers help plan and support public-safety education efforts attend community events and meetings share information about department programs and serve as a resource for residents and partner organizations. The position is designed to improve two-way communication increase public awareness of available services and support positive relationships across the diverse communities of Des Moines.

Minimum Requirements (See full job description for complete details)
- High School diploma or GED.
- Two (2) years of experience in community service outreach or social-service-related work.
- Ability to use social media for outreach and communication.
- Valid Washington State Drivers License with a good driving record.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule (evenings weekends holidays and special events).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in communications social work or a related field.
- Experience in community relations crime prevention or public outreach.
- Training in cultural competency crisis intervention and de-escalation.
- Bilingual or multilingual skills.
- Knowledge of Des Moines-area community resources social services and cultural organizations.
Special Requirements:
- Must be available to work a flexible schedule including evenings weekends holidays and special events as required.
- Ability and willingness to wear a department-approved uniform.
- Must successfully complete the departments prescribed training program and any required in-service training as directed by the Chief of Police.
- Successful completion of a criminal history and background check psychological assessment and/or polygraph examination or other testing deemed appropriate to carry out the responsibilities of the position.
- Ability to obtain and maintain certification in ACCESS (A Central Computerized Enforcement Service System).
- Because of the known effects of tobacco use the City of Des Moines does not hire applicants who use tobacco products.
