Job Summary

Security Officer - Full-Time
The Lexington Public Library (LPL) is a dynamic organization that strives to educate entertain and connect all people who live work or play in the greater Lexington area. To keep LPL progressing forward the Security Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for Library patrons and employees by patrolling monitoring and enforcing LPL code of conduct on Library premises.
Starting Hourly Pay
$17.97
Primary Work Schedule
Positionwill work 37.5 hours per week within the below operating hours.
Monday-Thursday 8am-7pm. Fridays 8am-6pm.
Saturdays 9am-5pm. Sundays 12pm-5pm.
Position will require occasional after-hours coverage for special events emergencies etc.

As a Full-time Security Officer a typical day may include the following
  • Maintains safe and secure environment for customers and employees by patrolling library premises hourly.
  • Secures facilities operations and personnel by assisting with surveying facilities and testing alarms maintaining surveillance conducting inspections and responding to emergencies.
  • Provides data on and prepares security reports for witnessed events; may recommend banning of violators.
  • Assists in staff training on security related issues relevant to public library system.
  • Reports irregularities; informs violators of policy and procedures; ejects trespassers.
  • Interact and communicate pleasantly and effectively with diverse customers and staff maintaining a positive and professional demeanor and providing friendly courteous service.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
This job may be a good fit for you if you have
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must have a valid drivers license with a safe driving record and the ability to have/arrange own transportation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and Library patrons and law enforcement representatives.
  • Ability to convey concise accurate information to the public.
  • Ability to carry out with limited supervision continuing assignments related to the daily security operations of the library.
  • Ability to work without sitting for a minimum of two hours and up to four hours and during that time is able to move with reasonable speed to locations throughout the work place in order to accomplish public service duties.
  • Ability to work with patrons in unusual conditions including but not limited to substance abuse.
  • Ability to work at multiple locations and to change schedules on short notice.
  • Must have good working knowledge of security operations safety practices in a business environment and enforcement procedures.
  • Ability to cope with mental and emotional stress related to working with persons with special needs or emotionally upset.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and public.
  • Must successfully pass a background investigation.

  • Two years combined security law enforcement or military experience preferred.
  • Two years of college level course work preferred.

Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Sufficient mobility to complete building and garage inspections climb stairs and patrol premises hourly. Patrol includes 1-4 miles of walking inside and outside and climbing up to 16 flights of stairs.
  • Must have the strength and agility to allow the employee to perform job duties which would be found at the level of medium work (i.e. lifting up to 40 pounds unassisted and exerting 20-50 pounds of force) and including occasional very heavy work (i.e. exerting in excess of 100 pounds.)
  • Emergency situations require running at speeds up to 5 miles per hour in short bursts up to one minute.
  • Ability to stand/walk for periods of two hours minimum up to four hours.
  • Able to deal with potential physical altercations.
