The Department

The Learning Commons is a hub of student faculty and staff services. Included in this area are traditional library services the Academic Success Centre for student support in writing math and other subject areas; Accessibility Services for students and the Testing Centre for both external clients and future Northwestern Polytechnic students. We are an area that encourages growth learning and exploration for those who seek our support and of each other.

The Role

The Educational Attendant will be called upon to provide in-class and out-of-class support to students who need more complex support in nature and may require hands-on assistance. The specific duties of the role will be dependent on the individual that the incumbent is assigned to work with but may include:

  • Guiding student behaviour/interactions in the class environment

  • Assisting the student in setting up personal materials in the classroom for learning

  • Assistance with note-taking

  • Acting as a reader/scribe for in-class activities/assignments

  • Working with the student out of class to assist with comprehension of assignment expectations organizing and planning of assignments booking accommodated tests and obtaining research materials etc.

Applicants must be available to work in person at the Grande Prairie Campus for the following timeswith the possibility of 1-3 additional hours per week depending on the students assignment load.

Mondays11:30-12:30 and 2:30-4:00
Tuesdays8:30-10:00
Wednesdays2:30-4:00
Thursdays8:30-10:00
Fridays10:00-11:00

Requirements

The successful candidate will have 2 years experience working in the Human Service field with preference given to those with experience in an educational environment supporting individuals with diverse needs. Necessary skills and attributes to be successful in this role include:

  • Mental Health First Aid Certificate an asset

  • Basic computer skills. Proficiency in MS Word PowerPoint Excel and Outlook as well as Zoom is an asset.

  • Problem-solving attitude to approaching issues while exercising independent judgment and ethical decision-making with a minimum amount of supervision

  • The ability to work accurately under tight deadlines and manage multiple deadlines simultaneously

  • Commitment to meeting and exceeding student expectations

  • Excellent communication interpersonal listening and judgment skills

  • Tact diplomacy maturity and the ability to empathize

  • Commitment and interest in student advocacy

This position is a temporary appointment and is anticipated to be up to 17.5 hours per week. Hourly salary is dependent upon experience and qualifications. The duration of this appointment is dependent on the students enrolment and attendance.
