Teacher-Counsellor

Temporary Full Time 1.0 FTE

GSACRD is seeking an applicant to serve as a Teacher-Counsellor. This Teacher-Counsellor position may involve a partial teaching assignment at Morinville Community High School as well as serving as the schools Teacher - Counsellor. The Teacher-Counsellor will be expected to support students in the academic social emotional and career domains.

Teacher-Counsellors will provide this function in accordance with Admin Procedure 250 - Counselling and the most up to date Guide to Education and Children First Act.

Duties to commence: January 29 2026 until June 29 2026

Qualifications & Duties:

  • Committed to being a model and witness to Christ-centered education values and beliefs.
  • Apply foundational knowledge about First Nations Métis and Inuit for the benefit of all students and support the Divisions goals towards advancing Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Possess a Bachelor of Education and valid Alberta Teaching Certificate.
  • Masters Degree in Counseling or equivalent course work is considered an asset.
  • College Certificate in Catholic Education is considered an asset.
  • Committed to achieving Division outcomes for students.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and a desire to serve in a supportive role in the school counselling domains - academic emotional/social and career.
  • Willing to work with students in a dynamic and fast paced school environment.
  • Desire and skills to lead school staff in areas of mental health wellness and connection.
  • Exemplifies through words and actions high levels of empathy emotional understanding and compassion for others.
  • An understanding of psycho-educational assessment with the ability to recommend appropriate classroom accommodations. (Ability to complete A B and/or C testing considered an asset)
  • Strong communication skills and a desire to collaborate with key stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal and relational skills with young children and adolescents.
  • Competencies in running class sessions or targeted groups for social emotional learning bullying awareness and prevention wellness academic skills etc.
  • A comfort level using Google Apps in support of student learning.


Duties:

(Note: the specific duties that a Teacher-Counsellor will perform at their school site will be determined in collaboration with the principal Teacher-Counsellor and Division Office lead for counselling. The duties will reflect the school context and the FTE assigned)

  • Provide guidance and support in the three domains of school counselling: academic emotional/social and career as appropriate for the age of the students.
  • Participate in and contribute to School Learning Team processes and action plans.
  • Support the mission of the school leadership team and serve as a leader among the faculty in the areas of mental health and wellness and creating a safe and caring school learning environment for all learners and staff.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with families.
  • Support the school plan around positive student behaviour.
  • Assist in the implementation of an inclusive model of education supporting all students to feel fully engaged and supported in their learning community.
  • Provide supportive services to students who are considered at risk.
  • Be an active part of your schools community and develop supportive relationships with staff parents and students.
  • Enhance the continuum of student supports by providing instruction to both large and small groups with possible topics ranging from anxiety relationships conflict resolution career planning. Competencies in running groups for students; anger management peer support social skills counselling etc.
  • Conduct Threat Risk Assessment Suicide Risk Assessment as required.
  • Develop Student Safety Plans as required.
  • Document Child Abuse and Neglect as per AP 314.
  • Provide recommendations for students who require accommodations modifications to be successful in their learning.
  • Respond to students who are experiencing emotional difficulties or who are in crisis as a supportive member of the learning support team.
  • Maintain records and notes as per the Divisions guidelines maintaining confidentiality and security of information.
  • Ensure the school community and students who meet with the Teacher-Counsellor understand the parameters of confidentiality in a school context.
  • Work collaboratively with external agencies (CFS Health Care Programming (i.e. Glenrose) Mental Health Supports) and Family Support Worker to coordinate supports for students/families.
