Position Summary:

The Peter Munk Cardiac Centre is thrilled to announce an exceptional opportunity for a computational biologist to join our dynamic team. You will be working directly under the visionary leadership of our Chief AI Scientist. We are looking for candidates specializing in areas such as Computational Biology Natural Language Processing (NLP) Computer Vision or Human-Computer Interaction. Duties

  • Integrate genomic proteomic clinical and imaging data using the Digital Cardiovascular Health Platform (DCHP). 
  • Analyze whole genome and epi-genome sequencing data from NovaSeq X Plus gene sequencing units. 
  • Establish and maintain collaborations with other Canadian and International Centers for data sharing and biospecimen analysis. 
  • Identify and engage in co-funding opportunities to support study costs. 
  • Contribute to the design and execution of research projects that align with the RFPs goals working closely with clinical experts at PMCC to translate research findings into clinical insights. 
  • Contribute to scientific papers and presentations for both academic and clinical audiences. 
  • Conduct data preprocessing feature engineering and exploratory data analysis on clinical and genomic datasets.
  • Apply intermediate level technical knowledge and skills in the domains of computer science computational biology and/or bioinformatics to the collection and analysis of complex biological data including genomic and proteomic data in the context of cardiovascular diseases.
  • Apply intermediate level technical knowledge and skills to suggest appropriate methods for data analysis or for programming approaches to solve problems that present for interrogating external database datasets for new insights / hypothesis generation or for visualization techniques. 
  • Contribute toward the development of guidelines procedures and standards. 
  • Implement machine learning and deep learning algorithms using Python TensorFlow PyTorch or similar frameworks.
  • Support the documentation and version control of AI models using GitHub.
  • Conduct literature reviews to stay up-to-date with emerging AI methodologies in computational biology and healthcare 

Qualifications :

  • Bachelors degree with at least 6 years of relevant experience or a Masters degree with 4 years of experience.
  • Ph.D. in Computational Biology Bioinformatics Genomics Computer Science or a related field (preferred).
  • Strong programming skills in Python R and shell scripting.
  • Experience with AI/ML frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • Proficiency in using high-performance computing (HPC) environments and distributed version control systems (e.g. Git).
  • Hands-on experience analyzing high-throughput sequencing data (e.g. WGS RNA-Seq proteomics).
  • Strong understanding of bioinformatics tools databases and computational modeling approaches.
  • Experience working with large-scale omic datasets and biobanks (e.g. UK Biobank All of Us).
  • Familiarity with workflow languages such as WDL or Nextflow  (an advantage).
  • Knowledge of NLP and computer vision applications in healthcare (an advantage).
  • Understanding of cardiovascular disease research (an advantage).
  • Excellent analytical problem-solving and communication skills; able to work independently and collaboratively.
