Job Summary

The Reactor Systems and Heat Transport department at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a highly motivated Computational Thermal-Hydraulics Engineer to support advanced modeling and simulation efforts for nuclear energy systems at our Idaho Falls Idaho location. Our team works a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off.

This position focuses on high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) thermal-hydraulics and verification and validation (V&V) of simulation tools and experimental benchmarks. The successful candidate will contribute to national and international collaborative efforts supporting the development of next-generation nuclear technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute CFD models using tools such as STAR-CCM and nekRS for thermal-hydraulic analysis.

  • Perform high-fidelity simulations including Large Eddy Simulations (LES) and Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS).

  • Conduct benchmarking and validation studies using experimental data from national and international facilities.

  • Support verification and validation (V&V) activities for independent analysis and regulatory-grade assessments.

  • Analyze and compare simulation results across multiple institutions and tools to identify trends and discrepancies.

  • Apply NEAMS tools for thermal-hydraulic modeling and analysis of nuclear systems.

  • Model natural convection systems including radiative heat transfer effects.

  • Prepare technical reports peer-reviewed publications and presentations for sponsors and conferences.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including experimentalists analysts and software developers.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering or directly related engineering degree from an ABET-accredited institution and (2) years of related experience or Masters degree in Nuclear Engineering or closely related field from an ABET-accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering or a closely related field from an ABET-accredited institution.

  • Hands-on experience with CFD tools such as STAR-CCM and nekRS.

  • Knowledge of high-fidelity simulation methods (LES DNS).

  • Experience with V&V methodologies and benchmarking of experimental facilities.

  • Familiarity with NEAMS thermal-hydraulic modeling tools.

  • Understanding of natural convection and radiative heat transfer in nuclear systems.

  • Experience with dry cask storage modeling and re-criticality simulations.

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python C or FORTRAN for data processing and automation.

  • Familiarity with high-temperature gas-cooled reactors and advanced reactor concepts.

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this classification the employee is frequently required to stand walk sit stoop kneel bend and work in an office and field environment which may include construction sites. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type handle materials manipulate tools and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required. Job Information:

  • The pay range for this position is ($77628 - $159228). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education relevant experience and other credentials.
