Job Summary

Within the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics this position works in collaboration with the attending physicians and will work within their scope of practice to provide excellent clinical care for patients with cancer and recipients of Bone Marrow Transplantation and cellular therapies within the Division Hematology Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation/ accordance with scope of practice as outlined by applicable state law regulations institutional policies and practice agreements the position will conduct comprehensive health history and physical assessments establish medical diagnoses order and evaluates diagnostic studies and develop treatment plans.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Functions independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to evaluate plan and deliver care to patients.
    Obtains and documents a health history; performs and documents complete system-focused or symptom-specific physical examination assessment and plan of care.
  • In collaboration provides healthcare services for primary acute and complex care of patients and manages patients overall care initiates appropriate referrals and consultations and identifying expected outcomes for diagnoses.
    Orders performs interprets and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques relevant supporting diagnostic information and diagnostic procedures where indicated.
  • Forms differential diagnoses and treats acute and chronic oncological conditions.
  • Prescribes therapeutic interventions both pharmacologic non-pharmacologic and surgical/procedural needed to achieve expected outcomes.
  • Required to become competent in ordering chemotherapy immunotherapy and targeted therapy including the management of side effects.
  • Opportunity to complete a specific clinical training in lumbar punctures and bone marrow aspirations. After completion additional privileges would be obtained.
  • Utilizes evidence-based approved practice protocols in planning and implementing care.
  • Provides specialty specific consultation services upon request and within specialty scope of practice.
  • Facilitates the patients transition between and within health care settings such as admitting transferring and discharging patients.
  • Participates in departmental educational conferences and clinical care meetings. Accurately and appropriately complete documentation of patient care in the electronic medical record (EMR) and other records for compliance billing and other regulatory

Education Requirement:

  • A masters degree is required. Masters degree in nursing is preferred. If masters degree is in a related field a Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required.
  • A Current RN license from the State of Iowa is required.
  • Current ARNP license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa is required.

Experience Requirement:

  • Ability to perform technical skill and function as an independent practitioner defined by collaborative practice agreement according to Iowa Board of Nursing and UI Health Care standards.
  • Excellent written verbal and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with indirect supervision and critical thinking/problem solving skills.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification.
  • Eligible for or possessing a federal DEA license.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience of one to three years in the care of pediatric patients or experience that demonstrates knowledge in the care of pediatric patients.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience providing clinical care in pediatric oncology/BMT.
  • Previous professional experience as an Advanced Practice Provider in pediatrics.
  • Previous professional experience as an Advanced Practice Provider in oncology/BMT.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in ambulatory care.
  • PALS/ACLS
