At a Glance! Lower Columbia College seeks a dynamic knowledgeable and student-focused instructor for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in our Substance Use Disorder Studies (SUDS) program.

This is an essential newly created position intended to anchor the program provide consistency for our students and support future program growth and stability. The successful candidate will join a team of educators committed to delivering high-quality evidence-based instruction across various educational modalities while promoting success among a student population with diverse needs and experiences. This role is essential for ensuring the curriculum meets state certification requirements for the Substance Use Disorder Professional (SUDP) and preparing graduates for professional practice.

Institutional Background

The mission of the LCC SUDS Program is to promote personal growth while preparing knowledgeable skilled and compassionate graduates for employment in the field of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment as defined by the Washington Administrative Code (WAC).

Established in 1983 the SUDS Program at LCC has built a strong reputation for high-quality instruction and a curriculum that reflects the latest trends in addiction studies. Our dedicated faculty works closely with an engaged advisory committee ensuring that course offerings remain relevant evidence-based and responsive to evolving local needs and the needs of the profession.

The Substance Use Disorder Studies Faculty position is 173 contract days (fall winter spring) with an anticipated start of September 2026. Courses are delivered through multiple modalities including online hybrid and in-person. The salary range is $77848 to $100097 based on education and experience . Please note the salary and retention stipend amounts within this posting are reflective of the 2025-26 salary amounts and does not include any legislatively funded COLA for the 2026-27 year. The Substance Use Disorder Studies Faculty reports to the Dean of Instructional Programs.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities

The faculty member will be responsible for fulfilling the terms of the LCC Faculty Association Collective Bargaining Agreement in the areas of Instruction Curriculum/Program Development College Service and Professional Development.

Instructional Duties
  • Teach collaboratively assigned lecture hybrid and/or online courses in the Substance Use Disorder Studies (SUDS) program curriculum.

  • Maintain program-specific curriculum covering addiction counseling competencies (e.g. screening assessment treatment planning group/individual counseling pharmacology professional ethics co-occurring disorders).

  • Employ evidence-based learner-centered teaching strategies and instructional materials that support a diverse student population and address different learning styles.

  • Ensure curriculum and teaching strategies recognize and effectively serve the varied needs experiences and cultural backgrounds of the colleges diverse student body and the populations they will serve.

  • Maintain accurate and timely student records including grades and attendance utilizing the colleges learning management system (i.e. Canvas) and student data systems.

  • Provide academic guidance and support to SUDS students promoting retention and referring them to appropriate campus resources when needed.

Program and Curriculum Development
  • Collaborate with faculty and administration to contribute to the future vision and scope of the SUDS program.

  • Design revise and update course curriculum to ensure alignment with current industry best practices evidence-based research and state regulatory standards.

  • Develop and implement processes for the systematic assessment and evaluation of program learning outcomes.

  • Coordinate and oversee student practicum/internship experiences including cultivating and maintaining partnerships with local treatment and community agencies.

  • Ensure the program curriculum prepares students for relevant state and national credentialing examinations.

College Service and Professional Development
  • Actively participate in program department and college committees governance structures meetings and service opportunities.

  • Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain currency in the field of addiction treatment and counseling and in instructional best practices.

  • Fulfill state or professional certification requirements to maintain current licensure and clinical expertise.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Masters degree or higher in a Human Services discipline such as Counseling Social Work Psychology or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.

  • Two (2) years of recent direct clinical experience working in the substance use disorder treatment area.

  • Current active and unencumbered state-level Substance Use Disorder Professional certification or related license (e.g. SUDP or equivalent).

  • Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based clinical practices (e.g. CBT Motivational Interviewing trauma-informed care).

  • Demonstrated ability to serve the needs of a diverse student body representing various ages abilities ethnicities education levels and cultural backgrounds.

  • Successful completion of background clearance (after hire).

Preferred Requirements
  • Experience teaching adult learners in a higher education setting (college-level).

  • Experience in curriculum development and assessment of student learning outcomes at the course and program levels.

  • Experience using technology to enhance student learning including competency with a Learning Management System such as Canvas.

  • Experience with distance learning and/or alternate instructional delivery systems.

  • Experience with clinical supervision.

  • Doctorate in a related field.
