POSITION SUMMARY
Sets up anesthesia equipment and supplies for procedures and cleans and checks equipment after use. Performs routine preventative maintenance and parts replacement on equipment. Under the supervision of a CRNA may assist with the assembly and flushing of IV tubing monitor flow rate assist with the placement of invasive catheters and help prepare patient for induction and transport.
Principal Duties:
1. Maintains organizes and updates anesthesia supplies.
a. Receives incoming supplies daily from Materials Management and Pharmacy departments stores appropriately within department.
b. Prepares supply requisitions for signature.
c. Orders all non-narcotic drugs from Pharmacy and supplies from Materials Management.
d. Rotates and/or replaces drugs and or supplies including anesthetic agents as per Hospital outdate policy and departmental inventory established by Administrative Nurse Anesthetist.
e. Prepares intravenous solutions with appropriate recipient sets and tubing employing aseptic technique for each procedure as required in the operating rooms Short Stay Center and holding area. If requested assists Anesthesiology personnel in initiating intravenous therapy.
f. Maintains inventory of all needed anesthesia items on individual anesthesia carts as well as in the main workroom.
2. Meets requirements established for infection control standards in Main O.R. and L&D
a. Wipes each anesthesia machine (including monitor cables) and work surface clean daily with antiseptic solution. Also as needed after cases. Changes towels when cleaning. Cleans each machine thoroughly at least monthly according to protocol.
b. Performs appropriate cleaning of other patient care equipment including laryngoscope blades counter tops machine tops workroom etc. Keeps workroom clean and organized. Wipes shelves and mops floors daily.
c. Cultures equipment and maintains infection control log with results and appropriate action taken.
3. Maintains a program of preventive maintenance for all anesthesia equipment.
a. Tests for accuracy and functioning of flow meters fail-safe mechanisms 02 analyzers positive pressure circuits and scavenging systems. Checks that nitrous oxide and oxygen gas cylinders are adequately filled and properly mounted. Records results of above in a Safety/ Maintenance Log.
b. Retrieves anesthesia equipment from the Critical Care Center and other post-operative areas to the Anesthesia workroom.
c. Maintains anesthesia machines and carts in a state of readiness as outlined by the Chief of Anesthesiology including changing batteries in oxygen and temperature monitors.
d. Notifies Administrative Nurse Anesthetist of all equipment failures to permit timely repair or replacement and delivers malfunctioning equipment to biomedical engineering.
e. Assures that Preventive Maintenance agreements are honored quarterly and all work is recorded in a Maintenance Log.
4. Assists with preparation and insertion of invasive lines including CVP arterial lines and pulmonary artery catheters.
a. Performs patient care functions as related to anesthesia needs within the parameters of established job descriptions for OR ER and Critical Care techniques including equipment calibration.
b. Assists Anesthesiologist in preparation of infusions and equipment for Cardiovascular Anesthesiology procedures. Brings additional IV fluids to an operating room when requested.
c. Collects and transports lab and blood bank requisitions specimens and blood products when requested to do so. Assists in pumping blood when asked to do so.
5. Prepares operating room anesthesia areas for cases and identifies surgeries requiring special equipment and/or drugs.
a. Assists Anesthesiology staff with room turnover between cases by replacing disposables replacing laryngoscope blades setting up arterial line pressure bags obtaining pediatric equipment.
b. Monitors O.R. schedule to anticipate major cases such as open hearts craniotomies aortic aneurysms and carotid endarterectomies. Prepares equipment as established by anesthesia staff.
c. Fully stocks all anesthesia cartsat the end of the day and re-stocks carts in Rooms 4 6 and 8 in the morning. Also checks rooms in the morning for waste syringes and to replace circuits trash bags and suction.
d. At the end of the day assures that fluid warmers B12 monitors and blanket warmers are in Rooms 4 6 and 8. Assures that an A-line is set up in Room 4 for trauma.
e. Prepares monitor and oxygen for transport of patients to ICU.
f. Performs blood test on the GEM and glucose monitors.
g. Performs additional clinical assignments as directed by the Chief of Anesthesiology or his designee.

2. Follows communication protocols to both internal and external customers including introducing him/herself with job title and experience asking open ended questions such as How may I be of help to you using the customers name as soon as it is learned.

4. Keeps customers information confidential including public places such as elevators or the cafeteria.
5. Provides assistance and offers help immediately including finding someone else to meet the request if unable to do so him/herself. Introduce other staff to customers when a hand-off occurs and explain that the person will provide excellent service.
6. Demonstrates commitment to excellent service recovery when a customers expectations have not been met.

3. Does not text or use e-mail during meetings (except for exigent or emergency situations).
4. Limits use of business cell phone during meetings (remain on vibrate and/or calls go to voicemail).
5. Makes every effort to answer telephone calls within three rings introducing him/herself department and title (if appropriate). Asks permission before placing the caller on hold or using the speakerphone. If caller is transferred gives the caller the extension number of the person he or she is being transferred to. Offers further assistance to the caller upon completing the conversation.
6. Maintains an appropriate voicemail message and when away from the office has an out-of-office email message that is brief current and includes name and department and offers the caller options if possible.
7. Returns email and voicemail messages promptly but no later than within one business day (24 hours).
8. Always mindful of voice and language in public.
Self Management:
1. Reports to work appropriately groomed and in compliance with the Hospitals dress code. Wears identification badge at all times at chest level and facing outwards so identification is clearly visible.
2. Complete all assignments within deadlines or negotiates alternative actions and time frames in order to achieve desired outcomes.

Qualifications :
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Licensure/Certification/Registration
Required: Completion of Anesthesia Technician Certification ASSTT within one year of employment. Preferred: Anesthesia Technician Certification ASSTT
Life Support Certification:
Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (BLS-HCP)
Education/Knowledge
Attained Level: High School
Applicable Experience
Experience (years): Required: I year Preferred: 2 3 years
Experience (describe required & preferred): One year of recent related experience in the Operating Room or Anesthesiology including applicwith knowledge of sterile technique.
