Job Summary
MGB Behavioral & Mental Health is an enterprise clinical service that supports and collaborates with all behavioral health departments and services across Mass General Brigham. Reporting to the Administrative Manager Acute Care Services the Behavioral Health Navigator supports system initiatives by providing operational leadership and guidance to the Central Access and Central Disposition Teams that enhance behavioral health patient flow across Mass General Brighams emergency departments medical floors and behavioral health inpatient units. The Navigator works closely with the Administrative Manager the Manager for Central Access & Disposition the BH Access & Assessment Nurse and Resource Specialists to facilitate initiatives across the system that improve patient throughput and access. Assigned to either the Central Access or Central Disposition track of the BMH team the Navigator guides the standard operations of that team during its busiest daytime business hours.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
-Work closely with the Manager of Central Access and Disposition (with oversight and approval from BMH Acute Care Services Manager) to ensure consistent implementation of standard workflows that facilitate access to various levels of behavioral health care for patients awaiting treatment across all MGB hospitals
-Participate in the daily operations of the Central Access or Central Disposition team; although the Navigator will be specifically assigned to either Central --Access or Central Disposition they are expected to maintain awareness of operational flow of both processes and be able to support the efforts of either
-Triage all referrals sent by MGB hospitals to Central Access or Central Disposition team to identify patient needs and implement or delegate referral processing
-Work closely with co-Navigator and Central Access and Disposition Manager to closely monitor and use knowledge of capacity and demand to help guide daily operational planning shift structure and resource allocation
-Serve as initial point of escalation for Resource Specialists regarding complex cases or circumstances
-Work closely with Manager of Central Access and Disposition and BH Access & Assessment Nurse (with oversight from BMH Acute Care Services Manager) to proactively identify complex cases that may require higher levels of intervention and actively support appropriate escalation or management of those cases
-Work closely with Central Access and Disposition Manager to assist in exploration and follow-up regarding safety reports or concerns related to team operations as assigned
-Support the management of the team schedule including assessing coverage needs and securing coverage for 24/7 operations; responding to and securing coverage for any callouts or schedule disruptions that occur during daytime business hours
-Support the onboarding and training of new employees as assigned
-Work closely with Manager to proactively identify vulnerabilities in daily workflows and propose solutions for process improvement
-Assist in the preparation and reporting of data metrics and outcomes to reflect progress toward program goals
-Represent Behavioral & Mental Health with internal and external stakeholders actively participating and supporting local central and statewide efforts toward improved throughput
-Navigator assigned to Central Access will report on behavioral health capacity and demand on systemwide and behavioral health capacity call(s) EMS coordination call and will participate in both internal and external meetings (DMH/EOHHS etc.) related to complex access cases
-Navigator assigned to Central Disposition will ensure BMH representation is present and engaged in all local length of stay meetings and will participate in both internal and external meetings (DMH/EOHHS etc.) related to complex disposition cases
-Work with Manager to develop and facilitate shift huddles to support consistent operations
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree required; concentration in Social Work Psychology or Health Care preferred

Working Conditions
- Hybrid/Assembly Row campus
- Participate in Admin On-Call rotation including 24/7 on-call coverage approximately 1 week per month
- Admin on-call responsibilities include but are not limited to response to staffing/coverage needs emergency management any escalations unable to be resolved by working team monitoring and managing communications related to BMH capacity high-level awareness of behavioral health capacity demand and patient flow
- Travel to and participate in local site-visits as is necessary to support BMH efforts
- Maintain accessibility and scheduling flexibility: Although general expectation is weekday business hours this role may require periodic non-traditional working hours to accommodate meetings or other unexpected urgent needs.
