Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery improvement research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne from ambulatory to inpatient and home and community-based services. On 1 January 2026 Alfred Health will come together with Kooweerup Regional Health Service Peninsula Health Bass Coast Health and Gippsland Southern Health Service to create Bayside Health a newly merged health service with more than 22000 employees caring for a community of over 1.2 million Victorians. The new health service will provide people with the best possible care with services that support them throughout their lives. The merger will also strengthen our workforce providing new training education and career opportunities. Subject to final approval on 1 January 2026 all employees from the five health services will transfer to Bayside Health.
The Department
The Department of Infectious Diseases at the Alfred Hospital is one of the largest and most comprehensive infectious diseases clinical services in the country. It is also an academic Department within the Faculty of Medicine Nursing and Health Sciences School of Translational Medicine Monash University and is a premier centre for clinical and biomedical research and education.
The Department offers expertise in general infectious diseases HIV/AIDS hospital-acquired infections and antimicrobial resistance infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship travel-related infections viral hepatitis sexually transmitted infections and infections in immunocompromised hosts including critical care burns cystic fibrosis and solid organ (lung heart and kidney) and stem cell transplant recipients. We have four active clinical units at any one time with a dedicated general infectious diseases inpatient unit an HIV inpatient unit a general consultative service and an immunocompromised host service. Through our Alfred Infectious Diseases Training Program we provide outstanding opportunities for advanced training in infectious diseases.
The Role
This position will work under the supervision of Prof Peleg on the SuperbugAI Platform research program. This Platform will leverage off the research groups strong momentum in the area of AI integration in healthcare using entire electronic medical record data plus new approaches to integrate pathogen genome data. The research group have established an expertcross-disciplinary group of investigators to develop evaluate and implement cutting-edge technologies to improve patient outcomes. This work will form the foundations of a transformative health service delivery to tackleAMR infections. SuperbugAi will focus on the key enablersto implement such an initiative in healthcare with the intention of using these findings to expand across Australia and beyond. The longer-term goal of this research programis to develop the systems and precision medicine models for the future of healthcare.
The AI Health Research Scientist will play a key role in developing testing and validating AI models for their application within healthcare and infectious diseases. They will focus on the application of large language models within healthcare in a safe and protected computing manner and will be involved in developing Agentic AI for various infectious diseases applications including clinical decision support infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship. This will involve access to Alfred Health electronic medical record data clinical microbiology reports and integration into hospital IT systems.
