Assistant Professor
JOB PURPOSE:
The University of Wyoming (UW) seeks to fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Applied Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) and Geospatial AI (GeoAI) for Remote Sensing. The successful candidate will develop active research and teaching programs contributing to both the theory and application of remote sensing and AI/ML. The position will be housed in the School of Computing (75%) with a 25% joint appointment in one of the following partnering academic units: Botany Geology and Geophysics Atmospheric Science or Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management.
We seek a faculty member who will catalyze interdisciplinary collaboration attract significant external research funding and enrich undergraduate and graduate education through innovative teaching mentorship and experiential learning.
This position targets the integration of AI/ML/GeoAI method developments with Remote Sensing technologies to advance scientific discovery and address real-world challenges across environmental natural and/or built systems. Areas of emphasis include:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will teach courses focused on the theory and application of remote sensing and AI/ML have the ability to integrate computing within their disciplinary domain and across fields mentor undergraduate and graduate students and contribute to the Schools statewide impact through outreach and engagement. This individual will play a central role in building the collaborative culture of the School of Computing and strengthening partnerships with their domain department.
About the School of Computing
The School of Computing is UWs interdisciplinary hub for applying computing across disciplines and providing students with essential digital and computational skills including supporting the AI initiative( The School emphasizes translational use-inspired research that leverages emerging technologies such as AI high-performance computing and data science to address grand challenges in science and society. The School offers programs in Geospatial Information Science and Technology (GIST) at the undergraduate and graduate (M.S.) levels as well as a M.S. in Artificial Intelligence. Partnering Academic Units & Research Areas
Botany The Botany Department bridges fundamental and applied research focused on understanding the patterns and processes of biodiversity. Research areas include both ecology and evolution and span scales of biological organization from genomes to organisms populations communities and ecosystems. We welcome applicants whose research focuses on developing and applying remote sensing and AI/ML theory and methods for linking pattern with process across a variety of scales systems and questions. For example applicants research may combine AI/ML/GeoAI with remote sensing to improve accuracy and/or use of big data sets or may develop computer vision approaches applied to ecological systems. We are especially interested in applicants working in forest systems who could contribute to our forest resources minor and certificate and the new Wyoming Forest Resilience Institute. The Botany department is home to the Rocky Mountain Herbariumand offers M.S. degrees in Botany a B.S. in Biology and our facultyparticipate in several interdisciplinary degree programs including the PhD Program in Ecology and Evolutionand the PhD Program in Hydrological Science.
Geology & Geophysics Integration of remote sensing geophysics and AI for Earth and environmental systems energy and mineral resources ( Science Surface-based airborne/suborbital and/or spaceborne remote sensing of the surface and atmosphere coupled to leveraging AI/ML tools to gain physical understanding from remotely-sensed data ( & Architectural Engineering & Construction Management Infrastructure sensing digital twins built-environment analytics and AI applications for transportation energy and water systems ( QUALIFICATIONS:
