Job Description:
Maintenance Worker Responsibilities
- Inspect washroom plumbing for leaking fixtures or pipes
- Check Fire Exit signs in building replace any burnt-out bulbs
- Inspect all Fire Alarm pull stations for broken rods replace as required
- Inspect building perimeter for damage or vandalism
- Inspect all building glazing from outside
- Hose down outside area of property front sidewalk fenced compound and smoking areas
- Check Hostel and Residential area lighting replace bulbs as required
- Inspect all Dormitories and Hallways for paint and/or plaster damage (repair or paint as required)
- Test all washroom fixtures (repair as required
- Inspect and maintain all fire doors
- Courtyard areas clean remove garbage to garbage compound
- Assist with linens and garbage as required
- Complete work orders as assigned
- Assist Supervisor as required
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment
- Perform any related duties as required by Property Manager
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Adhere to standards that are consistent with the values & philosophy of The Salvation Army and Toronto Housing and Homeless Support
- Participate fully and constructively in all Staff and Departmental meetings
- Engage in formal performance appraisals with Supervisor after the first 3 months of employment and annually thereafter
- Read and follow the Policy and Procedures Manual. Every employee must read (and sign that they have read) a copy of Hostel Standards & Guidelines (November 2002) and understand that they will be required to adhere to all guidelines in their dealings with Clients as well as with Staff and Administration
- Become familiar with the provisions of the Position Description & Operations Manual which will be provided for each Job Position
- As required and is applicable make suggestions that will improve efficiency working conditions or procedures to management
- Participate in authorized seminars and training sessions as requested
- Represent the Organization in a professional manner
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:
Internal:
- Work with Intake Workers to support building functioning.
- Works as part of Environmental Services Team
- Works with the Property Manager and the Housekeeping/Janitorial Supervisor
External:
MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:
- This position reports directly to the Property Manager
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- The hours of work are: Monday - Friday from 8am-4:30pm with an unpaid meal break.
PHYSICAL EFFORT/DEXTERITY REQUIRED
- The performance of the job requires operating industrial testing equipment and tools painting/plastering bending/twisting/lifting occasional ladder work and fine motor skills.
- The incumbent is required to lift more than 30 pounds
CONCENTRATION REQUIRED
- The performance of the job requires moderate to high attention when using motorized equipment handling hazardous chemicals and using non-motorized/general equipment
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The incumbents work environment is typically in the entire facility and surrounding property designated.
The Incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:
- Handle Garbage
- Isolation and monotony
- Odours
- Dealing with angry people
- Verbal abuse
- Exposure to toxic chemicals
- Various Weather conditions
- Washrooms (i.e. human waste)
EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS
The incumbent may be exposed to the risk of moderate to severe injury or illness due to:
- Physical attacks by others
- Exposure to infectious diseases
- Exposure to toxic chemicals
- Moving Objects
- Sharp Objects (i.e. needle pricks)
- Electrical Hazards
- Repetitive strain injuries (e.g. back wrist)
HEALTH AND SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Comply with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations
- Adhere to the agencys Health and Safety Program
- Report accidents/injuries/workplace hazards in a timely manner
- Conduct facility security/safety rounds on a regular basis according to policy
- Adhere to all Health and Safety Policies of the agency
EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- More than three months but less than one-year prior related experience including life skills and general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures
- Public School and/or High School Graduate
- An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable
- A police reference check for the vulnerable sector not older than 6 months that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $25.28 to $25.65 with a maximum of $26.01.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions internal equity and candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
