Rationale

The purpose of the role of English Teacher is to take shared responsibility for the planning delivery and assessment of English language and literature across the curriculum ensuring that students are consistently challenged and supported to achieve their highest academic potential. The English Teacher plays a key role in promoting a love for reading writing and critical thinking while fostering high standards of literacy articulacy and written communication.

They are expected to model and promote exceptional use of language set aspirational goals for students and implement engaging and effective teaching strategies that inspire and motivate learners. The English Teacher must be a suitably qualified and passionate educator with a demonstrated ability to lead and deliver high-quality English instruction that promotes deep learning and independent thought.

In addition to classroom teaching the role requires collaboration with colleagues to develop a coherent and enriching English curriculum as well as contributing to wider school life through student mentoring and extracurricular initiatives such as debating clubs writing competitions or drama productions. The successful candidate will be empathetic proactive and possess a strong classroom presence with the ability to positively influence both student outcomes and the broader learning environment.

Teaching & Learning

Setting High Expectations

• Set high expectations which inspire motivate and challenge students.
• Establish a safe and stimulating environment for students rooted in mutual respect.
• Set goals that stretch and challenge students of all backgrounds abilities and dispositions.
• Demonstrate consistently the positive attitudes values and behaviour which are expected of students.

Promoting Progress and Outcomes

• Be accountable for students attainment progress and outcomes
• Be aware of students capabilities and their prior knowledge and plan teaching to build on these
• Guide students in setting academic goals related to English proficiency including reading stamina grammar accuracy and interpretive depth. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how students learn and how this impacts on teaching
• Encourage students to take a responsible and conscientious attitude to their own work and study.
• Encourage students to develop a personal voice in their writing and confidence in public speaking.
• Recognise and respond to the diverse language backgrounds of students supporting EAL learners through structured language development strategies.

Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge

• Have a secure knowledge of English language and literature including grammar vocabulary development composition and literary analysis.
• Foster and maintain students interest in reading writing speaking and listening by using a variety of engaging texts and discussion-based activities.
• Demonstrate a critical understanding of current pedagogical approaches and developments in English education including culturally responsive texts genre-based writing and media literacy.
• Promote the value of reading for pleasure and academic inquiry by introducing a diverse and inclusive range of literature.
• Promote high standards of literacy articulacy and accurate use of grammar and standard English in both spoken and written forms.

Plan and teach well-structured lessons

• Deliver lessons that develop students skills in reading comprehension literary analysis creative and analytical writing and oral communication.
• Select texts and materials that reflect both literary merit and relevance to students lived experiences and cultural contexts.
• Integrate explicit vocabulary instruction grammar teaching and writing scaffolds into everyday practice.
• Use guided reading close reading strategies and writing workshops to support individual learning needs.
• Promote a love of literature and storytelling to develop empathy imagination and critical thinking.

Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all students

• Plan and deliver differentiated lessons that meet the needs of all learners including those with special educational needs disabilities English as an additional language and high-ability students.
• Foster an inclusive classroom environment where all students feel valued supported and able to access English content through varied and responsive instructional strategies.
• Demonstrate a clear understanding of the diverse factorsincluding physical social and intellectual developmentthat can impact learning and adapt teaching accordingly to support students at different stages.

Make accurate and productive use of assessment

• Know and understand how to assess reading writing speaking and listening across different genres and registers.
• Provide clear targeted feedback on students written work focusing on structure clarity grammar and creativity.
• Use marking and moderation strategies aligned with departmental and external criteria to ensure consistency and fairness in assessments.
• Track progress in key English competencies including textual analysis extended writing and verbal communication.

Behaviour Management

• Have clear rules and routines for behaviour in classrooms and take responsibility for promoting good and courteous behaviour both in classrooms and around the school in accordance with the schools behaviour policy
• Have high expectations of behaviour and establish a framework for discipline with a range of strategies using praise sanctions and rewards consistently and fairly
• Manage classes effectively using approaches which are appropriate to students needs in order to involve and motivate them
• Maintain good relationships with students exercise appropriate authority and act decisively when necessary

Fulfil wider professional responsibilities

• Make a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the school by participating in extra-curricular activities including (but not limited to) enrichment opportunities such as school publications creative writing clubs debating teams book groups or theatre productions.
• Actively contribute to the development of the English department through collaborative curriculum planning resource sharing and assessment moderation.
• Develop effective professional relationships with colleagues including support staff and know when to seek or offer specialist advice to enhance teaching and learning.
• Take ownership of continuous professional development staying informed of national and international developments in English education including digital literacy and interdisciplinary approaches.
• Communicate effectively with parents and carers regarding students academic progress and overall well-being.

General

• To complete all other tasks that can be reasonably expected of a teacher
• To be fully aware of Health and Safety across the school
• Demonstrate and actively promote the core values of the school ensuring a shared understanding of the schools definition of learning is reflected in daily teaching practice classroom culture and interactions with students.

Health and Safety

• Emphasizes the importance of safety in all areas of the curriculum communicating to the students the importance of a responsible attitude towards personal safety the safety of others and respect for The Hamilton International Schools property and equipment
• Perform duties on time and with due diligence to safeguard Hamilton students

• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities
• Assist in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct
• Ensure that all the necessary health and safety rules and procedures are being followed
• Maintain an awareness of all the health and safety measures to be taken when in school

Teachers must maintain high standards of ethics and behavior within and outside school by:

Teachers must have an understanding of and always act within the cultural expectations of Qatar and the policies and expectations of the school which set out their professional duties and responsibilities.

Position Requirements

Education:

• Bachelors Degree in teaching from an accredited institution
• Required teaching certification for Qatar MOEHE
• Meet professional teacher education requirements of school
• Child Care and Protection

Experience: Minimum 3 years relevant experience

Language: English is mandatory
