Four years of experience in computer and/or network support cybersecurity electronic security systems or public safety radio system support including one year of full-time experience in communications infrastructure design and planning AND a bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in electrical engineering computer science networking computer systems cybersecurity or a closely related field; OR an equivalent combination of
education and experience.
License Or Certificate
- A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
- Positions within this classification assigned to the Cybersecurity team require a Certified Ethical Hacker certification within one year from the time of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.

The Senior Network Engineer (Physical Electronics and Security) within the Customer and Enterprise Services team will work independently and under the supervision of the Enterprise Support Technology Coordinator to support and maintain Washoe Countys Physical and Electronics Security environment. The position is responsible for the planning implementation maintenance programming monitoring and troubleshooting of access control systems camera systems switches NVR appliances and panic alarms.

The position is responsible for implementation maintenance programming monitoring and troubleshooting of network systems including switches routers firewalls access points and Cisco ISE.

The Senior Network Engineer within the Washoe County Regional Communication System (WCRCS) will work independently and under the supervision of the Regional Communications Coordinator to maintain Washoe Countys regional public safety radio system. The position is responsible for implementation maintenance programming monitoring and troubleshooting of wired and wireless systems including microwave 700 & 800 MHz radio systems and MPLS networks.
The Ideal Candidate Will
- Have strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Have experience with interdepartmental outreach.
- Have the ability to troubleshoot various types of equipment and systems including:
- Land Mobile Radio system (familiarity with Harris EDACS system and/or P25 Phase 2 protocol)
- Microwave radio equipment (Nokia MDR 8000/9000)
- T1/TDM circuits
- Battery chargers and rectifiers
- Security systems for communication shelters (cameras access control systems motion detectors)
- MPLS Network (Nokia 7705 experience preferred)
- Have the ability to install troubleshoot and manage P25 Radio System for Public Safety.
- Have the ability to install and troubleshoot telecommunications system infrastructure.
- Have the ability to work in extreme environments including trips in snow cats and helicopters for site access on rare occasions; most winter trips are taken in Polaris with snow tracks.
- Be willing to work in loud and hazardous conditions such as generator rooms on batteries and rectifier units and near RF-operated equipment.
- Have the ability to work on-call overtime and irregular hours as needed to support needs of public safety.
- Be comfortable driving large vehicles in an off-road environment.
Conditions of Employment
The Washoe County Employees Association (WCEA) Supervisory Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) covers the Senior Technology Network Engineer position.
Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation. Effective January 1 2025 the $39.00 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.
Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.
Washoe County hires all new employees at the minimum rate of the salary range and eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5% until they reach the maximum salary for the classification. Upon promotion current Washoe County employees are placed at the minimum rate of the salary range for the higher classification of the new position OR a promotional calculation whichever is greater.
