Overview
Nurses in the Hematology/Oncology Infusion Suite at New London Hospital provide high quality and comforting care to patients with chronic illness including autoimmune disorders blood disorders and cancer. Applicants should be proficient in IV skills and ideally have experience with care and use of central venous access devices (e.g. implanted ports). Major duties include administration of biologic medications chemotherapy and blood products as well as monitoring and responding to infusion related reactions. Important skills include communication attention to detail and collaboration with peers.
Responsibilities
Clinical:
- Coordinates patient care with providers as appropriate.
- Maintains established departmental policies and procedures objectives safety and infection control standards.
- Triages patient calls and documents in the medical record.
- Oncology Clinic
- Prepares equipment and assists physicians during treatments and examinations of oncology patients.
- Administers anti-neoplastic agents and other medications adhering to NLH guidelines.
- Assists physician with the examination/evaluation of oncology/infusion patients.
- Provides patient resources as needed including but not limited to referrals for social services and other needs related to treatment.
Administrative & Clerical:
- Assists in the development of nursing policies and procedures related to the care of patients receiving specialty services.
- Maintains accurate records on each patient.
- Assists in registering new patients scheduling appointments and follow-ups on missed appointments as necessary.
- Assists in the preparation of operational and capital budgets for the oncology clinic.
- Prepares patient education.
- Coordinates patient prescription refills.
- Oncology Clinic
- Documents assessments plan of care treatment and response to nursing care for oncology/infusion patients.
Clinic Maintenance:
- Keeps patient care areas clean and neat.
- Ensures availability of supplies and equipment.
- Oncology Clinic
- Ensures that equipment is in working condition and good repair reporting concerns as necessary.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- 1-3 years combined experience in infusion-related setting. Experience with administration of chemotherapy preferred.
- ONS Fundamental Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy Provider Card (within 6 months of hire).
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) preferred
