Job Summary

Overview:

We are seeking a Quality Engineering Architect with deep technical expertise in retail Point-of-Sale (POS) systems to design and implement innovative solutions that remove barriers to test automation and accelerate quality outcomes. This role is a blend of architect and engineer responsible for analysing complex POS architectures solving hardware dependency challenges and engineering scalable test solutions. (e.g. service virtualization emulators mock frameworks etc.)

The ideal candidate is a hands-on problem solver who can design the blueprint for quality enablement build engineered solutions and work side-by-side with quality engineers and developers to bring them to life. This person will directly impact how Kroger tests and validates mission-critical POS systems used by millions of customers daily.

Key Responsibilities:

Architecture & Solution Design

Analyze current POS system architecture and identify testing bottlenecks tied to hardware and integration complexity.
Design and implement service virtualization emulation and mocking solutions for POS hardware (cash drawers printers credit card readers pin pads etc.) to enable automated scalable testing.
Create architectural patterns and frameworks for test automation in CI/CD pipelines ensuring they are extensible maintainable and reusable.
Collaborate with development and infrastructure teams to align QA solutions with overall system architecture.

Engineering & Hands-On Problem Solving

Build custom tools utilities and frameworks to enable automated testing in environments where out-of-the-box solutions dont exist.
Implement API-first and modular testing strategies to decouple software validation from hardware dependencies.
Partner with DevOps to integrate test frameworks into continuous delivery pipelines enabling shift-left quality practices.

Quality Enablement & Collaboration

Mentor and guide senior quality engineers ensuring adoption of modern test practices.
Provide deep technical reviews of automation codebases test frameworks and integration approaches.
Act as a bridge between engineering QA and product teams ensuring solutions meet business goals while accelerating quality.
Provide technical guidance in tools such as Karate Selenium BDD frameworks and performance tools like JMeter.

Required Qualifications:

10 years in Quality Engineering/Software Engineering with at least 3 years in an architect or principal engineer capacity.
Strong expertise in POS systems and retail environments including knowledge of hardware/software integration points.
Proven experience implementing service virtualization mocking frameworks or hardware emulators to solve testing constraints.
Strong engineering background with hands-on expertise in:
Test automation frameworks (BDD Selenium Karate Cypress etc.)
API testing and service-layer validation
Performance testing tools (e.g. JMeter Gatling)
CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins GitLab Azure DevOps etc.)
Experience with cloud-native test environments and service virtualization platforms.
Strong coding/scripting background (Java JavaScript/TypeScript Python or similar).

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience modernizing QA practices for large-scale retail or POS transformation programs.
Knowledge of edge computing and distributed retail architectures.
Experience building custom automation frameworks or test harnesses.
Contributions to QA Centers of Excellence or Communities of Practice
