Job Summary

Primary Purpose

This position is the primary instructor for the pre-apprenticeship in construction and heavy equipment operator. The primary purpose is to coordinate the program including degrees associated certificates part-time faculty and advisory committee activities and to instruct program courses. Duties include supervising work experience students and serving as an academic addition to specific job duties associated with this position the employee in this position is expected to actively participate in student recruitment student retention successful student achievement and K-12 and business/industry partnerships.


Important Notice: This position is funded by a grant through March 2027. Employment beyond this period is contingent upon continued external funding and is not guaranteed.

Description of Essential Functions

Instruction (80% of Time)

  1. Teach various courses in Pre-Apprenticeship.
  2. Use instructional methodology appropriate to the audience and to the student (e.g. lecture demonstration group discussion technology-enhanced delivery computer-assisted delivery and distance delivery). Must be able to explain and deliver materials in a variety of ways to meet the needs of a broad range of learning activities.
  3. Evaluate students in accordance with the criteria in the course outline and other applicable college policies and procedures. Is responsible for turning in grades according to college policy and procedure.
  4. Create a course syllabus for each course taught which includes but is not limited to course outcomes course structure materials to be covered grading criteria due dates for materials exam dates and office hours.
Other Institutional Duties (20% of Time)
  1. Demonstrate continued professional growth by staying current in and expanding knowledge of subject area(s) and teaching techniques through a plan of professional development. Attend conferences and professional meetings.
  2. Participate in committees and other institutional duties as described in the faculty collective bargaining agreement.
  3. Participate in and provide information necessary for the recruitment of students into their programs; and the marketing of courses programs and the college. This may include travel and working with students and faculty in high schools colleges and other institutions and public and private agencies.
  4. This position may advise students as this case the faculty will meet with advisees at least once each term to assist students in determining goals inform students of program and degree requirements review student schedules and progress and refer students to needed services. The faculty will maintain records of advising sessions to include dates of meetings student major or goals student progress and other pertinent information.
  5. All faculty are expected to participate in and provide information necessary for the recruitment and retention of students into their programs the marketing of courses programs and the college. This may include travel and working with students and faculty in high schools colleges and other institutions and public and private agencies.
  6. Support College leadership in developing departmental goals and objectives as part of the institutions continuous improvement cycle; this includes participating in the college wide accreditation process by preforming departmental planning assessment and improvement to meet core theme objectives and contribute to mission fulfillment.
  7. Attend student convocation ceremony at the end of each academic year.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Three (3) years of Construction Trades experience or Heavy Equipment Operating experience within the construction industry.

  • Ability to work effectively and sensitively with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives and abilities
  • Ability to evaluate student progress both empirically and holistically and to prescribe and develop curriculum materials for individuals and classes.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire students.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English with others both orally and in written form which includes the ability to restate at various language levels to simplify and to use demonstrations which relate to previous knowledge and concrete experience.
  • Ability to use instructional delivery methods which reflect an adult orientation.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with department members and members of the college community in meetings and on projects.
  • Ability to review understand apply and share concepts presented in training programs conferences and/or professional literature.
  • Willingness to teach various hours as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants for this position possessing one or more of the following knowledge skills and abilities with receive preferred consideration through the selection process:
  • A minimum of two (2) years demonstrated teaching experience preferably in an apprenticeship or in an adult education setting.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR LICENSES
Must reside in the State of Oregon. Southwestern Oregon Community College is unable to support out of state employment at this time.

Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization US Department of Education as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.
