The Transit Parts Specialist is responsible for maintaining accurate inventories of a variety of parts equipment and supplies that are required to support transit fleet and facility maintenance. The work involves ensuring accuracy of inventories in automated vehicle maintenance systems resolving inventory discrepancies verifying shipments and billing and assisting fleet maintenance personnel by identifying and issuing required inventory items.

Recruitment information:This is an internal recruitment for King County Metro Transit. It will be used to fill one (1) Special Duty Assignment (SDA) Transit Parts Specialist vacancy at Vehicle Maintenance anticipated to last approximately 6 months with the possibility for an extension. This recruitment may be used to create an eligibility list of qualified Transit Parts Specialists to fill future SDA vacancies in this classification. If an eligibility list is created it will remain active for up to 12 months from the posting date and may be used at the discretion of the hiring authority.

Job Duties

As the Transit Parts Specialist you will:

  • Order receive inspect store and issue a wide variety of inventory for automotive coach and heavy-duty equipment repair and maintenance; order receive inspect store and issue a wide variety of inventory.
  • Maintain appropriate stock levels through cost-effective inventory control; maintain manual and automated processes to accurately maintain vehicle maintenance and inventory database systems; prepare distribute and maintain material documents.
  • Process all phases of inventory changes including collecting and processing inventory for sale or salvage; research inventory needs prepare and stock materials to designated locations; conduct periodic inventory cycle counts and spot checks.
  • Assist mechanics and other shop employees in identifying and obtaining required parts components and supplies.
  • Request stock transfers from other parts rooms to replenish stock; order special stock or supplies from outside vendors in emergencies when stock is not available internally.
  • Check incoming stock against slips bills of lading purchase orders and delivery receipts; enter inventory arrivals into inventory databases; charge inventory items to appropriate cost centers.
  • Prepare appropriate storage space for incoming stock. Load and unload shipments and stock shipments using a variety of warehouse equipment such as forklifts and overhead cranes.
  • Prepare and assemble parts kits for storage and later disbursement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills

We are seeking candidates who possess the following minimum qualifications:

  • Work experience in warehousing or parts room including ordering receiving stocking storing and issuing parts equipment materials and supplies in a safe and efficient manner and in a computerized inventory system environment.
  • A basic knowledge of inventory best practices and demonstrated ability to effectively use an Enterprise Asset Management Systems.
  • Ability to read and understand parts catalogs and technical publications written for automotive parts and/or heavy-duty diesel or truck parts.
  • Ability to receive stock store and issue parts equipment materials and supplies in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and maintain effective work relationships and provide good customer service.

Desired Qualifications

  • Successful completion of the Transit Parts Specialist Workforce Development Program.
  • The completion of a vocational warehousing and/or parts counter training program.
  • Parts room experience in a diesel transit coach automotive or marine repair industry.
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively communicateprioritizeand provide customer service.

Necessary Special Requirements

  • A valid Washington State drivers license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must pass a post-offer pre-employment physical examination.

Application and Selection Process:

Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications outlined in this announcement will not move forward in the selection process. All submitted materials will be reviewed to confirm eligibility. The Vehicle Maintenance team will evaluate letters of interest and application materials to determine the competitiveness and relevancy of each qualified candidates work experience skills training and education. The selected candidate receiving a conditional offer of employment for this SDA will need to complete pre-employment process steps which may include passing a King County Personnel Record Review driving abstract review and physical.

Work Schedule and Location

  • This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible. VM workschedules and locations are based on a seniority system and schedules are bid on once or twice a year depending on location. Employees must be able and willing to work any shift including any combination of days off at any King County Vehicle Maintenance location.
  • Employees in this non-exempt classification work 40 hours a week and are eligible for overtime pay if scheduled. There are a variety of work site locations in North South and Downtown Seattle. Employees may be assigned to one of several Vehicle Maintenance locations throughout King County Metro. Work is performed in a 24/7 facility where there are three shifts. Employees must be able and willing to work any shift including any combination of days off at any location. Work location and shift assignments are determined by a seniority pick system. Picks take place up to three times yearly.
