Job Summary

Overview

Under the supervision of the Special Education group at the Edith Bowen Laboratory School this position will provide instruction to small groups of children with learning disabilities and/or work one-on-one with individual students. Learning disabilities may include emotional and behavioral disorders communication issues challenges and physical disabilities.

The primary work of a Special Education Aide is to make sure that he or she follows a pre-planned course of action to meet special education objectives. As part of your work you will use a variety of methods within the classroom to interact with students on various levels.


Depending on their work and specific duties may work with students who have physical or mental limitations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Special Education teacher in developing classroom curriculum based on individual students needs
  • Provide support in imparting specialized education based on lesson plans
  • Perform specialized tasks to achieve instructional and behavioral objectives
  • Assist special education teacher with behavior modification procedures
  • Help students with their mobility need and ensure the provision of a safe classroom environment
  • Provide instructions based on lesson plans and assist individual students in comprehending concepts
  • Monitor students during activities and downtime and intervene in case of adverse activities
  • Adapt to classroom activities and assignments to serve the purpose of reinforcing classroom objectives
  • Communicate with students to determine their needs and ensure that they are fulfilled properly
  • Assist lead teacher in developing and adapting conventional teaching methods to meet the individual needs of students

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • At least one year of relevant experience in an educational or childcare setting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in education or related field preferred
  • Some understanding of working with people with mental emotional and physical disabilities is desirable
  • Ideally this is a 6 hour per day position and it would not allow you to come and go to classes; however candidates with exceptional qualifications and a workable schedule may be considered. If you are in school please submit your fall schedule with your application. The hours for this position are roughly 8:30 am-3:00 pm

  • Strong collaboration skills; able to work well with a team
  • Effective multitasking; can prioritize tasks based on importance and deadlines

Employees work indoors and outdoors with occasional temperature changes. The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and may lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
