4Summary:
The Spanish Interpreter will provide patients families visitors and staff access to employees who accurately interpret via face-to-face encounters during designated hours. Spanish Interpreters are bilingual and proficient in English and Spanish with the ability to interpret health care information to and from Spanish-speaking patients/patients families and Medical Center health care providers. Will act as a language liaison between the patient family and staff in support of the medical plan of care. Facilitates acquisition of Interpreter services for non-Spanish languages (via OPI/over the phone VRI/video remote interpreter and/or contract services).
Note: ** This position is PRN with varying hours morning evening overnight weekend and holidays. **
Required Education & Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent required.
1-2 years of experience in a healthcare setting with current knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
Previous interpretation/translation experience (preferred).
Ability to precisely and accurately translate critical medical information from English to the patients native language.
Strong interpersonal skills flexibility and customer service orientation.
Excellent communication and active listening skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
Ability to interact and communicate with people in-person and over the telephone often in stressful situations.
Required Certification & Testing:
Selected applicants must meet Spanish proficiency levels defined by Cook Childrens Health Care System and measured by objective and nationally recognized oral language reading and writing tests prior to employment.
All selected applicants are tested prior to an offer being made to determine their Spanish proficiency level and must test at a proficient level to qualify. Testing will be administered by a contracted testing service. Spanish proficiency levels are verified as part of the employees annual review.
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for Health Care Providers is required within 30 days of employment and must be maintained.
