What you will be doing:
In this Engineering Assistant 3/Engineering Associate/Engineer/Architect 1 Flex position youll focus on safety analysis and proposing infrastructure upgrades to prevent and reduce serious crashes and injuries along Alaskas surface transportation system. Surface transportation touches all Alaskans and visitors to our great state every day. Alaska DOT&PFs mission and vision includes every traveler safely arriving at their destination no matter how they get there.

As an Engineering Assistant 3 youll be the key technical developer for the Central Region Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) using your engineering skills to create project nominations and track their traffic and safety success over time and as the DOT&PF adopts the latest in national best practices for Alaskas complex climate and needs. As an Engineering Associate youll oversee the entire HSIP process from start to finish applying your expertise to develop comprehensive HSIP plans spanning multiple years and for millions in capital projects.

As an Engineer/Architect 1 youll manage all facets of HSIP ensuring public safety and accountability through advanced design and program oversight as well as providing expert legal support for state-related issues.

The Central Region Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) Coordinator plays a vital role in addressing the documented safety needs across the largest populated region in the State while also advocating for safety treatments in future plans and designs through supporting a variety of the departments technical disciplines and consultant partners with resolving traffic safety issues in capital projects. The working environment you can expect:
Our Anchorage office is located at 4111 Aviation Avenue. This work location allows you many options to live and play near a wide range of fantastic outdoor areas and urban community activities. The office building is generally comprised of cubicles and office space and organized by departmental sections and teams including the Traffic Safety & Utilities Section Traffic Safety group in which this position resides. This position requires occasional travel primarily day-trips but sometimes overnight trips within southcentral Alaska (normally 2-3 trips per summer month). Occasional attendance at evening meetings may also be required.

• Drivers License is required.
• An Alaska Professional Engineers License (PE) registration is required per AS 08.48.281 or a PE registration with a state recognized by the Board of Registration for Architects Engineers and Land Surveyors to be eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b) if applying for the Engineer/Architect 1 Level.
  

Engineering Assistant 3:
Bachelors degree with a major in engineering architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
AND
Two years of engineering architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:
A bachelors degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
AND
Two years of engineering architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitutions:
Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering architecture or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree.

Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).

Engineering Associate:
Eight years of progressively responsible work experience in engineering land surveying or architecture of which one year was as an Engineering Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:
ABET accredited college or technical school courses in engineering architecture land surveying or a closely related curriculum may be substituted for the non-specific required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month). A bachelors degree with a major in engineering architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET may substitute for four years of the non-specific required experience.

Engineer/Architect 1:
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect.

Note: Positions in this class require professional registration as either an Engineer or an Architect. The employer will designate which professional field is required for each position.

Special Note:
Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
