Position Summary:

Diesel Technician Apprentice Program (DTAP) Training Instructor is responsible for managing coaching and developing apprentices to ensure they gain the technical skills and foundational knowledge needed to become fully competent diesel technicians. This role oversees the creation and refinement of training aides curriculum and hands-on learning criteria ensuring every apprentice receives structured consistent and high-quality instruction.

The responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Training apprentices in specific skills techniques and safety procedures often in a real-time production environment
  • Solidifying relationships between mentors and apprentices will be a cornerstone of the apprenticeship model developing strategies for fostering these relationships will crucial for long term program successes
  • Working with other managers recruiters and potentially external partners (trade schools) to support the program and recruit new apprentices
  • Working together with our in-house training and development team on training initiatives while providing technical assistance and guidance through our Fleet Tech Support program
  • Conducting skills assessments to identify training needs and adjusting the curriculum accordingly
  • Ensuring apprentices receive consistent high-quality coaching in areas such as diagnostics repair procedures preventive maintenance and shop safety
  • Coordinating with shop leadership to align apprentice work assignments with training objectives
  • Providing regular feedback performance evaluations and development plans to support apprentice growth
  • Maintaining accurate records certifications and documentation required for program compliance
  • Facilitating classroom sessions hands-on workshops and vendor-led training opportunities
  • Monitoring tools and equipment inventory to ensure apprentices have the resources needed for training
  • Supporting recruiting efforts by attending career fairs presenting at partner schools and identifying trade programs across our footprint that are strong candidates for partnership
  • Promoting positive shop culture professionalism and adherence to company policies

To be qualified for this position you must possess the following:

  • Strong knowledge of class 8 tractor and trailer maintenance and DOT/OSHA guidelines
  • Should have pronounced leadership traits and experience with developing mentoring and training personnel
  • Familiarity with systems and technologies used in modern heavy-duty LTL Fleets
  • Must have 10 plus years of industry experience
  • Possesses comprehensive proficiency in both the hands-on application and theoretical principles of diesel technology
  • Proven capability to design develop and execute comprehensive training programs that drive skill development and performance
  • Strong computer skills and proficient in: Microsoft Word Excel and Outlook
  • Must be able to multi-task
  • Willingness to travel as needed
  • Excellent written and strong oral communication skills
