The Corcoran Department of History at the University of Virginia invites applications for the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Professorship in History at the rank of Professor expected to begin August 10 2026. We invite applications from scholars of early North American History during the era of Thomas Jefferson (ca. 1740-1830) with a preferred specialization in Indigenous and/or environmental history. This is an endowed professorship one of the most prestigious honors bestowed by the University of Virginia on a faculty member. Candidates should have an extensive publication record a rigorous and innovative research agenda demonstrated leadership in the field and a commitment to mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. The teaching expectation is two courses per semester.
To meet the minimum qualifications for this position applicants should hold a PhD.
To meet the preferred qualifications for this position applicants should hold a PhD in history and have a strong record of excellence and achievement in scholarship and teaching.
Nominees for endowed professorships at the University of Virginia should have achieved exemplary accomplishments in their discipline as determined by an independent assessment of their peers.
